Roanne Bardsley (Boiling Point) is writing a TV adaptation of Northern Irish writer Claire McGowan’s novel What You Did for the BBC.
Roanne Bardsley’s TV adaptation of Claire McGowan’s What You Did is in development as a limited series at the BBC, with Leopard Pictures producing. The series is yet to be greenlit.
McGowan’s book follows the reunion of six university friends after 20 years apart. Host Ali finally has the life she always wanted, a career she can be proud of, and a family with her college boyfriend, now husband. On the night of their reunion, Ali’s best friend staggers in from the garden, bleeding and traumatized, and claims that she has been assaulted by Ali’s husband, Mike.
The BBC previously secured the rights to her novels The Lost and The Dead Ground, but neither projects were ever adapted for the screen.
"Obviously, I really hope that it happens,” said McGowan in 2014, speaking to the Belfast Telegraph about the BBC acquiring the rights to two of her novels. “I always have to explain that it does not mean it will get made [...] but it is a good accolade."
Bardsley is a writer and associate producer on TV series Boiling Point, adapted from the Phillip Barantini independent film of the same name. Her other writing credits include Hollyoaks, Screw, and The Buccaneers.
