RTE announced yesterday that one of it's most senior executive, Mr. David Blake-Knox, is leaving the station to take up work in Britain.
Mr Blake-Knox has been one of the main creative forces in RTE and developed the critically acclaimed 'Nighthawks' in 1989. As director of television productions he held the number two position in television after managing director, Mr Joe Mulholland. Mr. Blake-Knox is a native of Belfast and joined RTE in 1979 after working in children's theatre. He first worked in current affairs on such programmes as 'Today Tonight' before moving into light entertainment and is reported to have recently written material for the American Comedian Ruby Wax.
The resignation of Mr. Blake-Knox is a major blow to the station and further departures from senior television management are reported to be expected shortly, according to the Irish Times. Speculation centres on two other senior executives who are reported to be considering job offers or early retirement.
Among the challenges facing the station is increased competition from the newly launched TV3 which, although it has not yet, will place pressure on revenue accrued through advertising. From next year the station will also be required to devote 20% of its programme budget to Independent productions. The television station lost £3 million last year and is reported to be running over budget.
On the plus side the station is currently not losing business to TV3 as both are taking audiences from the British channels and it has recently won the right to set up and run the digital network with a strategic partner. But the expected increase in competition from TV3 and digital channels, restructuring, loss of 20% of programming budget have all required the station to seek a large number of redundancies.
