Documentary filmmaker Katherin Ferguson has been announced as one of the participants of this year’s BAFTA Breakthrough, an initiative that showcases and supports upcoming talent.
Director Kathryn Ferguson is among the BAFTA Breakthrough participants of 2023. Earlier this year, her debut feature documentary Nothing Compares won the George Morrison Feature Documentary award at the 20th Anniversary IFTA Awards.
BAFTA Breakthrough showcases and supports the next generation of creatives in film, games and television. Selected by members of the screen industry, the initiative identifies upcoming talent and supports them at a ‘breakthrough’ moment in their career. This initiative gives them access to professional coaching, industry introductions and BAFTA membership.
“There are so many stories about Ireland I want to tell through the perspective of being an Irish woman,” said director Ferguson. “There’s so much bubbling up in its people. Ireland’s changed dramatically in the last 10 years. There’s a real energy there right now, with a younger generation wanting to change the narrative.”
Earlier this week, the Sinead O’Connor documentary won the Rose d’Or Award for Arts at the Rose d’Or Awards ceremony, which celebrates international excellence in entertainment programming.
Ferguson is currently working on her second feature documentary for release in 2024 through Universal. She is also developing a short drama based on a short story by Belfast writer Wendy Erskine, which is being adapted for the screen by screenwriter Stacey Gregg.
