The Deepest Breath, directed by Irish filmmaker Laura McGann, has received four nominations for the Critics Choice Awards.
Netflix-distributed documentary The Deepest Breath has been nominated for four Critics Choice Awards, these include: Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography (Tim Cragg), Best Score (Nainita Desai), and Best Sports Documentary. The documentary was written and directed by Laura McGann, and produced by Jamie D'Alton, Anne McLoughlin, John Battsek, and Sarah Thomson.
The Deepest Breath follows free-diving champion Alessia Zecchini and expert safety diver Stephen Keenan, their meeting at the pinnacle of the free-diving world, and experiences of the extreme sports’ rewards and risks.
Following the documentary’s release on Netflix, IFTN spoke with director Laura McGann and producer Jamie D’Alton about bringing an Irish film to an international audience, and using archive material to create a story that unfolds in the present tense.
The film is a co-production of Motive Films, RAW, Ventureland, and A24. A24’s Stephen Curry: Undefeated has also been nominated for Best Sports Documentary, and their Steve McQueen-directed Occupied City is also nominated in the Best Cinematography category as well as the Best Director and Best Historical Documentary categories.
