BAI Publishes Guidance for Public Service Broadcasters
10 May 2011 | The BAI has published a new document entitled Guidance for Public Service Broadcasters (PSB) on the format of a code of fair trading practice. The document has come about as a result of Section 112 of the 2009 Broadcasting Act where each PSB must prepare a code of fair trading practice, setting out the principles that it shall apply when agreeing terms for the commissioning of programming material from independent producers.

Cork Screen Commissioner Sought
09 May 2011 | The Cork Screen Commission is currently seeking a Cork Screen Commissioner. Launched in February of this year the new Cork Screen Commission will act as the primary point of contact for companies working or intending to work on location in Cork and it is planned that a Cork Screen Commissioner will be in place by July. The deadline for applications for the Commissioner role is Friday, May 20th.

BAI Publishes Right of Reply Scheme
04 May 2011 | The new BAI Right of Reply Scheme will come into effect from Wednesday, May 4th and will provide for the broadcast of a Right of Reply Statement that will allow individuals to put right incorrect information which has been broadcast and which has resulted in a person’s honour or reputation being impugned.

CR Entertainment Merges With beActive Intl, 'The Knot' Feature In Production
21 Apr 2011 | CR Entertainment, the Irish production company behind multi-platform series such as ‘Aisling’s Diary’ and ‘Beat Generation’, has merged with Portuguese producer beActive Produções Interactivas resulting in a new company, entitled beActive International. The group is currently co-producing a feature film entitled ‘The Knot’ with plans to bring future film projects to Ireland.

15 Apr 2011 | The High Court in Dublin has ordered the closure and wind up of the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, just under three years after the art-house cinema opened its doors to the public.

MESH Liquidator to be Appointed April 12th
25 Mar 2011 | A creditors meeting was held on Friday, March 18th to discuss the future of Irish-based production outfit Magma European Scripting House (MESH). Approximately 20 of the body’s 60 creditors met with the aim of appointing a liquidator for the company however none was appointed. A liquidator is now to be set at a meeting on April 12th.

Light House Cinema Taking "Action" Against Closure
22 Mar 2011 | Dublin’s Light House Cinema Board Members are to meet this evening to discuss the upcoming High Court hearing of a petition to wind up the Smithfield based cinema. Disagreements regarding a rent increase lead to the issuing of a wind-up petition from John Flynn, the cinema’s landlord but Light House cinema co-founder, Maretta Dillon tells IFTN the board members are hoping to negotiate the situation.

James Hickey is New CEO of IFB
10 Feb 2011 | The Irish Film Board has announced the appointment of James Hickey to the role of Chief Executive of CEO for the group. James Hickey is a Partner of and Head of the Media and Entertainment law group of Ireland’s largest law firm Matheson Ormsby Prentice. He replaces Simon Perry whose contract came to an end in January 2011.

BAI Publishes Revised Election Coverage Code
02 Feb 2011 | The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has published a revised Broadcasting Code on Election Coverage. The document includes a revised moratorium on election coverage that will restrict election coverage from 2pm on the day before the election until the closing of polling stations on the day of the election.

RTÉ Challenges ‘Drug Tolerance’ Claims
20 Dec 2010 | Following reports that Gerry Ryan had cocaine in his system at the time of his death on April 30th 2010, RTÉ has issued a statement in response to allegations of drug-related activity at RTÉ. In the document the broadcaster rejects any suggestion of tolerance of drug abuse among its workforce or at its premises and claims that RTÉ’s management were unaware of Gerry Ryan’s drug use.

Noel Curran is New Director-General of RTÉ
09 Nov 2010 | The Chairperson of the RTÉ Board, Tom Savage announced today, November 9th that the RTÉ Board has, with the consent of the government and the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, appointed Noel Curran as the next Director-General of RTÉ. Noel succeeds Cathal Goan in the role.

Bruckheimer will 'Take the Money' from Wild Rover
18 Oct 2010 | Emmy-winning US producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, (Pirates of the Caribbean, CSI) is currently adapting a version of a format created by Belfast production company, Wild Rover Productions. ‘Take the Money and Run’ is a new series created by Wild Rover’s Philip Morrow (Secret Fortune), Matthew Worthy (Scratch and Sniff’s Den of Doom) and Kieran Doherty (writer, Sesame Tree) that is now set for transmission on America’s ABC.

Interview: Philip Flynn on Dublin's Digital Hub

The government initiative has been in operation since 2004 and will see its third and final phase of development come into effect in 2012. Film & TV Gives €200m Boost to Irish economy
27 Sep 2010 | Mary Hanafin TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport last weekend visited the set of the feature film ‘Neverland’ which is currently in production in Ireland. As IFTN readers will be aware, ‘Neverland’ is one of several film and TV productions filming in Ireland this year which will be exported to audiences around the globe. Furthermore it is estimated that, despite the global financial downturn, the entire film and television industry will contribute an estimated €200 million to the Irish economy in 2010 in terms of spend on local goods, employment and services.

IFB Begins Search for New CEO
20 Sep 2010 | The Irish Film Board is currently inviting applications for a new Chief Executive Officer who will start with the group next January. The move coincides with the conclusion of the five year term of appointment of current CEO, Simon Perry. Applications for the role will be accepted until Friday, October 8th.

'La Mula' Ongoing Woes Lead to Spanish Injunction
03 Sep 2010 | The Irish Film Board and UK Film Council have today released a joint statement outlining their position with regards to ‘La Mula’s ongoing financial woes. Reports have emerged that ‘La Mula’s Spanish co-production company, Gheko Films recently approached both the UK’s Department of Culture Media & Sport (DCMS) and Irish Finance Minister in a bid to resolving the film’s financial situation. Furthermore Irish co-producer, Subotica’s Tristan Orpen Lynch has explained to IFTN that an injunction has now been set against Gheko Films.
