Variety has released an article putting a spotlight on rising Irish talent working behind the camera. This follows on from a Variety article published earlier in the week charting the Irish film industry’s growth over the past thirty years, and a retrospective of Cartoon Saloon for their 25th Anniversary.
Variety’s 10 Rising Irish Stars Behind the Camera highlights “10 creatives to look out for”. The list consists of writers, directors, costume designers, production designers, producers and cinematographers working in the Irish film industry.
Among the writers and directors included on the list were Aislinn Clarke, whose upcoming film Frewaka is being described as the first Irish language horror film, and Andrew Legge, whose 2023 film LOLA, premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and was the first Irish film to win the Méliès d’Or at the 56th Sitges Film Festival. Actor, writer, and director Antonia Campbell-Hughes (It Is In Us All), Holding co-writer Karen Cogan, writer-director Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother), and writer-director Louise Bagnall (Late Afternoon) are also featured on the list.
In regards to crew, the list highlights the work of production designer Ferdia Murphy (LOLA, Handsome Devil, The Watchers), costume designer Gwen Jeffares-Hourie (Sing Street, Abigail), and cinematographer Narayan Van Maele (So This Is Christmas, Double Blind, An Irish Goodbye).
Richard Bolger (Hallow Road) is the sole producer featured on the list.
