25 Oct 2017 :
The European Film Promotion (EFP) are set to host a record number of European Oscar entries this year with 'Song of Granite' one of twenty-eight films being screened in LA for Academy members, journalists, US-distributors and international buyers.

The screenings will be held in the Dick Clark screening room from November 2nd - 15th. Among these films will be Ireland's foreign language entry 'Song of Granite', which was selected by the Irish Film and Television Academy last month. The campaign itself is financially supported by Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme of the EU and participating EFP member organisations.

This year marks the largest ever number of entries for the foreign language category at the Oscars with a total of 92 entries registered. Alan Maher, who has been featured in this year's edition of 'Producers on the Move' (POM), has been highlighted by the EFP and will see his oscar entry 'Song of Granite', included in the EFP's LA screenings along with a host of other highly renowned filmmakers.

Irish entry 'Song of Granite' explores the dramatic life story of legendary seannós singer Joe Heaney and is directed by Pat Collins (Silence), The film was co-written by Pat Collins, Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde and Sharon Whooley, and produced by Alan Maher, Jessie Fisk and Martin Paul-Hus. The DOP was Richard Kendrick, editor was Taghd O'Sullivan and Sound was John Brennan. The film premiered to critical acclaim at the SXSW Film Festival in US earlier this year.

The project is supported by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board, BAI, TG4 and with the financial participation of Société de Développement Des Entreprises Culturelles – Québec, Telefilm Canada. Song of Granite is a Marcie Films, Amerique Film production with Harvest Films, South Wind Blows, Roads Entertainment. Oscilloscope is releasing the film in the US, and Thunderbird in the UK and Canada, and Wildcard in Ireland.

Others such as the Georgian feature film debut, 'Scary Mother', by Ana Urushadze, which was produced, amongst others, by Lasha Khalvashi. His fellow participant Gints Grube from Latvia realized 'The Chronicles of Melanie', a wartime drama depicting the deportation of the Baltic people during the Stalin era, while Maria Blicharska from Poland produced the Lithuanian submission 'Frost' together with colleagues from Lithuania, France, and the Ukraine.

Much lauded director Joachim Trier enters into the Oscar race for the first time with his supernatural love story, 'Thelma', by former Producers on the Move, Eva Jakobsen, Fredrik Heinig and Mikkel Jersin. Pol Cruchten, who directed last year's Oscar submission from Luxembourg, produced the family drama, 'Barrage', by compatriot Laura Schroeder starring Isabelle Huppert, while Swiss producer Lukas Hobi accomplished Petra Volpe's award-winning drama about female empowerment in Switzerland in the Seventies, 'The Divine Order'.

On Jan 5th, 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will announce which films have been nominated from all of the international entries to go forward in the final line-up to compete for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Academy Awards will take place on 4th March 2018.
