Guth Gafa (meaning ‘captive voice’) is Ireland’s only independent documentary film festival. They focus on showcasing the latest award-winning International and Irish documentary films on thought-provoking subjects, and promoting the art of great story-telling, through film, to rural Irish communities. The festival returns in 2015 to Kells, County Meath. It will get underway on Friday, October 2nd through to Sunday October 4th in the magnificent and tranquil grounds of the 18th century Headfort House, a hidden gem close to the historic village of Kells in Co Meath.

Colourist, Eugene McCrystal, and DOP, Michael Lavelle, will discuss the grading process from shoot to edit. With the advent of digital cinema cameras and RAW workflows, modern cinema cameras can resemble a computer more than a film camera. For this reason, it’s important for DOPs to understand the post-production process particularly in relation to colour-grading. Knowing how much the image can be manipulated in post will help to guide DOPs as to what can and can’t be achieved on set and how far the camera can be pushed.

Launched in 2008, Reel Art is designed to provide film artists with a unique opportunity to make highly creative, imaginative and experimental documentaries on an artistic theme. Operated in association with Filmbase and the Dublin International Film Festival, Reel Art will wholly support two films with grants of €70-€80,000 per project. Reel Art films will premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival in February 2017.

Clones Film Festival takes place over the October bank holiday weekend, from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th October 2015. The programme this year will once again be packed full of daring and fresh international and Irish features, documentaries, animations and short films which promise, as ever, to whet the cinematic appetite of all. Each year, Clones Courthouse and the Old Post Office (now Clones Art Studios) are transformed into cinema venues. The Cinemobile will also make its annual pilgrimage to the town for the four-day event. Opening Night on Thursday 22 October will take place at Clones Courthouse. This is always a free event and all are welcome to attend. The nightly Festival Club will also make a welcome return to Adamson’s Bar on Analore Street. There, festival-goers can chill, chat or boogie to the hottest new talent in Irish music.

30th-31st October 2015 Colour Correction with Da Vinci Resolve - Galway Film Centre

This two day course suits editors wishing to learn an industry standard colour correction and grading tool.

This course will be delivered using DaVinci Resolve 11 Lite, free for use on footage up to UHD 3940×2160. This enables editors familiar with Non Linear Editing colour correction effects and filters to explore DaVinci Resolve post-course without initially committing to its expense. The theory of colour correction will be imparted along with guidance on how to interpret videoscopes and use them as prompts for corrections. Shot matching will be demonstrated in addition to the creation, storage and application of custom looks.
