Taught by experienced screenwriter Lindsay Sedgwick, this courses gives an excellent grounding in the basics: an introduction to the craft of screenwriting, developing character, writing the individual scene, dialogue, structure, format, writing for TV, writing comedy, rewriting techniques and writing treatments.

Writing Television Drama is a course aimed at writers who are interested in learning more about the fundamental skills of crafting good television drama in all its forms. Runs over 8 weeks on Monday Evenings.

28th February - 1st March Weekend Hands-on Camera & Lighting Workshop - Filmbase

This intensive 2-day workshop will introduce beginners to many aspects of camera and lighting work, as well as those looking to refresh their skills. Using the Sony EX1 camera our experienced tutor will introduce students to the basic functions of the camera throughout day one. On day two students will get a chance to create simple lighting set-ups to test out.

March 2015 (Date TBC) Producing a Short Film - Filmbase

Do you want to know what it takes to produce a short film? Producing a Short returns to Filmbase with experienced Producer, Conor Barry (Savage, Love Eternal). Using successful short films as case studies, this course is theory based with some practical exercises. It is the ideal course for first-time filmmakers.

This popular weekend course, guided by Award-winning director Colm Quinn (Needle Exchange) and aimed at beginners, encourages students to write and present documentary proposals, develop and research ideas, produce, direct and interview. Other subjects taught on this course are digital camera skills, sound recording and advice on funding & markets. Two proposals are selected to be made into short documentaries over a weekend.

The 2015 March On Film – Film Making competition is now looking for entrants giving new filmmakers a chance to shoot a short film in March for a chance to win a grand prize of a filmmaking package. The ethos is all about encouraging new film makers to get out there and get shooting with some of the winning teams from 2014 shot and edited their films on tablets. All entered films will be shown at the Irish Film Board Sponsored screenings and the Top 10 Finalists will be in with a chance to win the grand prize of a Film Making Package which includes a 1000 euros worth of Film Equipment Rental, a film course at Screen Training Ireland and Mentoring from some of Ireland’s top Industry Professionals.

Entrance cost is €30, free for students.


5th March 2015 ‘Casting Screen Talent’ event with Casting Director Maureen Hughes - IFTA

IFTA have announced that they will host a ‘Casting Screen Talent’ event with Academy members with renowned Casting Director Maureen Hughes on Thursday, March 5th, 2015. Maureen has cast over 40 Irish features and 22 dramas, with credits including ‘Once’, ‘Love/Hate’, ‘Raw’ and most recently the acclaimed political biopic ‘Charlie’. At this IFTA Academy Members event, Maureen will explore the process involved in casting for the screen such as working with the director, auditions, watching a lot of shorts and creating chemistry between actors in casting.

7th - 8th March 2015 Hands on: Sound for TV & Film - Filmbase

From mixers to microphones and cables, there is a lot to consider. Take this hands-on course in which an experienced professional takes you through the basics and guides you through common situations, errors and best practices. As part of the course you will record and review various interview set-ups and scenes. Emmy-nominated Sound Recordist Noel Quinn (Michael Collins, Reign of Fire).

8th March 2015 Inside Pictures Film Leadership Skills Development Programme -DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS

Inside Pictures is an intensive film leadership skills development programme which takes place over three modules, each a week long, in London and Los Angeles between June 2015 and January 2016. The programme is in its twelfth year. It is funded by Creative Europe under the MEDIA Sub-Programme and Creative Skillset, and is presented by the UK National Film and Television School. This year they will recruit 20 ambitious executives from across Europe who want to expand their business knowledge of the international film industry, extend their network of senior contacts and develop their leadership skills. Scholarships and bursaries to help with fees and expenses are available.

A cornerstone of IRISH WEEK is the 8th IRISH FILM FESTIVAL, which takes place in Formula Kino Gorizont (M. Frunzenskiy – Komsomolskii prospect, 21/10) featuring 27 screenings of 9 award winning Irish films over the March 11th – 22nd period. Directors and actors from many of the films will attend selected screenings for Q&As. Films will include the Ken Loach-directed JIMMY’S HALL and the European premiere of Oscar Nominated animation SONG OF THE SEA. All films will be screened in English, with Russian subtitles.

12th March 2015 In Focus Maurice Sweeney – IFTA

Director Maurice Sweeney has made some of the most talked about documentaries on Irish television in the last ten years. Well-known for diverse projects including Cromwell in Ireland, Flann O Brien: The Lives of Brian, The Irish of 9/11 and WB Yeats No Country for Old Men, Maurice has also delved into dramatic territory with the docu-drama Saving the Titanic (starring David Wilmot and Liam Cunningham) and more recently The Roaring Boy and After Braveheart. In Focus will explore Maurice’s acclaimed IFTA award-winning work across his arts documentaries, sports documentaries and docu-dramas.

Established in 2003, The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (JDIFF) has fast become Ireland's premier feature film festival and takes place in Ireland's capital city over the course of eleven days and nights each Spring. The next edition of the festival will take place 19 - 29 March 2015. Stars coming to JDIFF this year include Oscar Winner Russell Crowe and Golden Globe Winner Kim Cattrall.

19th March - 22nd March 2015 Boston Irish Film Festival

This year the festival will host thirty films and will screen entirely at the historic Somerville Theater, Davis Square. It will also host Q&A’s with 12 visiting Irish filmmakers and of course the prerequisite after-parties.

20th March 2015 AFTER '16 - Irish Film Board Short Film Competition - DEADLINE

Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) would like to invite filmmakers to give their response to 1916 and the hundred years since. They are looking for stories, both fact and fiction, which illuminate, surprise and even provoke - on the wide subject of 1916 and what it has left in its wake. Films must be 8-12 minutes in length.

The deadline is 1pm Monday 16th March 2015.

27th March 2015 Deadline for the Feature Submissions for the 2015 Galway Film Fleadh

The Galway Film Fleadh, the premier platfrom for New Irish Cinema, is now accepting feature submissions for the 2015 edition of the festival, which will run from 7th - 12th July.

The earlybird deadline for feature entries is Friday 27th February at 5pm. The entry fee is €30. The regular deadline is Friday 27th March at 5pm, the fee for which is €40.

Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival For Young People and the National Performing Arts School (NPAS) are joining forces for the inaugural NPAS and Cinemagic Industry Film Academy which will take place in Dublin this July. To mark the launch, Oscar-nominated actress and Cinemagic Patron, Saoirse Ronan will be in Dublin on Monday 30 March for a Q&A where she will be interviewed by two young aspiring actors.
