This intensive 2-day workshop will introduce beginners to many aspects of camera and lighting work, as well as those looking to refresh their skills. Using the Sony EX1 camera our experienced tutor will introduce students to the basic functions of the camera throughout day one. On day two students will get a chance to create simple lighting set-ups to test out.

Run over 12 weekends, this hands on course will take you through the filmmaking process from script to screen, culminating in two groups shooting two short films.
With all tutors current film practitioners, this course has been designed to encourage and develop independent filmmaking. This is ideal if you are looking for a way into the film industry or want to gain a better understanding of filmmaking – at the end of the course you will have a short film to use as part of a show reel for your Curriculum Vitae or film school.

Galway Film Centre: Screening and Talk: Under the Hood (Mark Byrne and Rob Dennis) (Screening in association with Amnesty International Ireland)

In Belarus, some battle for democracy, social justice and civil rights, while others struggle just to survive. The feature documentary, Under the Hood, brings us on a journey through a country where the secret police is still known as the KGB and innocently gathering in public is considered a crime. Shot in conditions of secrecy, the film takes us from the protests and secret opposition meetings of the capital, Minsk, to the horse-drawn carts and hand-tilled fields of the countryside. In 2013, this film was officially selected for Guth Gafa, Nordic Film Days (Lubeck, Germany), Vilnius International Film Festival and received a Mark of Distinction from New York City Indie Film Festival. This year, it has been officially selected for Dingle International Film Festival.
The screening will be followed by a Q & A with Mark Byrne.

About the film-makers: Mark Byrne and Rob Dennis shot Beyond the Wall together in 2010, a documentary film about life behind the Iron Curtain. Mark Byrne had been working as a camera assistant and cameraman for the previous 15 years, including on feature film productions. His Irish compatriot Rob Dennis worked for twelve years in the USA as an investigative journalist, where he most recently wrote for the daily Oakland Tribune.

This practical course will guide participants through all of the steps
involved in making a short film. Tutored by industry professionals, the
course offers a hands-on, step by step approach that will take a small group
of 8 participants from a starting idea to a finished film. The course runs
for seven weekends during which two short films will be devised, scripted,
shot and edited.
Dates: 16 days (8 Saturdays & 8 Sundays from 9.30am - 4.30pm each day):
February 8 & 9, February 15 & 16, February 22 & 23, March 1 & 2, March 8 &
9, March 22 & 23, March 29 & 30, April 5 & 6, 2014. Note there is no class
on bank holiday weekends.

Seminar Outline
The screenwriting masterclass with Peter Morgan will provide examples and advice for emerging screenwriters, as well as support and encouragement for those more established within the form, and can be viewed as an ideal opportunity for filmmakers to witness at first-hand the workings and methods of this master of the art form.
Participant writers will hear from one of the world’s great exponents, how he has developed his screenwriting skills, and how many of the applicants might hone theirs in the light of that knowledge.

Tutor Profile
Peter Morgan is an international award- winning writer for stage, screen and film. In addition to receiving Oscar®, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominations for his screenplays for Stephen Frears’ THE QUEEN, Ron Howard’s FROST/NIXON and, most recently, HOWARDS’S RUSH, Morgan has won a host of international awards. Morgan has won a host of international awards. His most recent play, THE AUDIENCE, which starred Mirren, was a West End smash hit, receiving nominations in five categories at the 2013 Olivier Awards. His previous play, the Olivier and Tony Award-nominated FROST/NIXON, received critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic before being adapted into the Academy Award®- nominated film of the same name.
Morgan’s many film credits include the award-winning THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, which won the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay; THE DAMNED UNITED; and Clint Eastwood’s HEREAFTER, which starred Matt Damon. Morgan’s upcoming credits include the Hugh Hefner biopic PLAYBOY, which is in development with Warner Bros. Pictures; and the television movie CHRISTOPHER JEFFERIES, to be directed by Roger Mitchell. Morgan’s extensive television credits include the BAFTA Award-winning THE DEAL; THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP, which is the first part of Morgan’s Tony Blair trilogy; and the multi-award-winning LONGFORD.

This 5 day workshop is specifically designed for those interested in experiencing stronger, more resonant vocal quality with ease, in conjunction with creating more physical flexibility, strength and expressive body movement. Lessac Kinesensic Training is unique in its holistic, comprehensive and creative approach to all aspects of developing the body and the voice, for speech and singing and as creative instruments of communication, behavior and perception. Kinesensic training is a self-teaching, sensory-based process based on feeling the way the human body functions naturally when it is free of adverse conditioning. It then uses those physical sensations to identify, produce and voluntarily control the voice and body. This training is beneficial for actors, singers, directors, barristers, presenters, business people. A daily schedule would be full of instruction with appropriate breaks within that time frame.
Participants of the Lessac Kinesensic Voice and Body Training will expect to learn:
• Posture and breathing
• Breath support and breath control
• Body energy and flexibility
• Body conditioning and physical fitness
• Body characterization
• Vocal variety and contrast
• Text interpretation
• Development of full dynamic pitch range
• Control of projection for stage, microphone, and personal use in intimate, social, or formal situations
• Development of the male and female voices for speech and singing
• Connecting physical and vocal life to the emotional experiencing system
Robin Carr is an Associate Professor of Voice and Acting in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Southern Mississippi. Ms. Carr is a Lessac Certified Trainer, one of only twenty five in the world. She is currently a board member for the International Lessac Training and Research Institute. Robin was fortunate enough to teach a one week workshop with Arthur Lessac himself at the University of Rijeka in Croatia and taught the Lessac voice and body work for their new Post Masters’ Program in Acting, Media and Culture Studies under the direction of International Hollywood Star, Rade Serbedzija. Most recently, Robin has presented Lessac Voice and Body Workshops at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, Australia and in Manila, Philippines with the newly formed Theatre Actors Guild.

This course is a primer in directing. An introduction to all the main aspects of directing is combined with practical exercises in shooting to give an overview and experience of the basics – the practical knowledge you need in order to direct films. You will be guided through the process of preparation, taking in all the major departments that come together to make a film possible. In addition to practical exercises, all participants will shoot and crew short scenes.

Priority is placed on putting a lot of the scary myths of screenwriting to rest and creating a context in which the participants can develop their own project over the duration of the course. People should come along armed with a story idea they’d like to pursue, whether it’s at the “two lines on a scrap of paper” stage or even if they’ve already had a crack at a script.

This feature documentary asks whether art and artistic expression can allow
us to look beyond the facts of someone's past and see into their soul.
Street poets, hip-hop artists and songwriters GI, Costello and Willa Lee
from north Dublin are the main subjects of this film which premiered at the
Jameson Dublin International Film Festival in February 2013, where it won
both the audience award and also the Michael Dwyer Discovery Award.
The director, Claire Dix, will take part an in-depth discussion about the making
of the film afterwards.
