Two of Ireland’s rising stars Aisling Bea (Living With Yourself) and Niamh Algar (The Virtues) have been announced amongst the cast of Sweet Dreams, a crime-thriller being pegged as “Fargo In England”, ahead of its launch at the Cannes Virtual Market.
Written and directed by Carl Tibbetts (Black Mirror), the leading cast also features Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), Mia Goth (Suspiria), Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London), and Billy Howle (Outlaw King).
The show, which charts a series of unfortunate coincidences that bring the overreaching ambitions of a bunch of petty criminals to a nasty end, is being produced by Matthew James Wilkinson (Yesterday) of Stigma Films. Deadline is reporting that Algar will play the role of a police chief trying to put an end to the destruction.
Speaking with Deadline about the series, writer/director Tibbetts said:
“I am thrilled to be working with this fantastic cast and to be partnering with Amp and Stigma on my second feature. Sweet Dreams is Pulp Fiction in Martin Parr’s England. An action-packed pitch-black ensemble crime-thriller. Think No Country For Old Men, Fargo in England, and In Bruges and Shallow Grave. Funny, dark, violent and heart-warming; it has it all”.
Bea, who has recently been named by BAFTA as one of their Breakthrough Talents ahead of this year’s TV Awards, is known for writing and starring in Channel comedy series This Way Up, Stephen Frears-directed Quiz, and Netflix’s drama Living With Yourself alongside Paul Rudd.
Algar has also had an incredibly busy year starring in Shane Meddows critically-acclaimed BAFTA-nominated series The Virtues, HBO Max’s Raised By Wolves, and more recently, Irish drama Calm With Horses starring alongside Barry Keoghan, Cosmo Jarvis, Ned Dennehy, and David Wilmot.
The show, which is hoping to begin shooting in Q4 of 2020, will debut at the Cannes Virtual Market where it will be launched by AMP International who is handling world sales.
