IFTA Q&A Series: Kerr Logan on Acting
05 May 2023 : Luke Shanahan
Kerr Logan
To mark the 20th anniversary of the IFTA awards, we are showcasing Irish talent who are blazing a trail across our industry, working in front of and behind the camera.

Hosted in association with IFTA, this Q&A Series connects with Irish talent who represent a range of disciplines across our industry.

We find out what they look out for in the projects they take on, what their approach is to filmmaking and collaboration; what inspires them; and what recent work in the industry they most admire.

Kerr Logan is nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Drama for North Sea Connection. He is a RADA graduate, and had his first high profile role as Mathos Seaworth in Game Thrones. Other notable screen credits include Margaret Atwood’s Netflix series Alias Grace, BBC’s C.B. Strike, and Lisa McGee's Channel 4 sitcom London Irish. He also starred in Irish TV mini-series Dead Still.

IFTN: IFTA celebrates 20 years this year. How does this significant milestone reflect the growth and strengthening of the Irish film industry over the past two decades?

KERR: “It is no coincidence that as IFTA celebrates their 20th anniversary, it happens to be in the same year as the ‘Irish Take Over’ at the Oscars. For such a small country we are becoming a force in the film industry and have some of the most talented creatives in the world. I am incredibly proud to be a very small part in that.”

IFTN: What do you look out for in a script?

KERR: “In scripts I always get excited the most by something I haven’t done before. If it is a genre I haven't done yet or a type of character I haven't played before, I always get challenged the most creatively, trying something completely new.”

IFTN: How do you prepare for auditions, and what advice would you give to younger actors?

KERR: “I learn every single audition. If I was to give advice to any young actor it would be to do the same, only then can you properly explore what is really happening in the scene. It is also too competitive not to put your best foot forward.”

IFTN: How did you approach playing your character in this film, and how much rehearsal was involved?

KERR: “In The North Sea Connection we had a few days of rehearsals before we began shooting, these shows are always such a fast turnaround so any preparation time is such a luxury.”

“My character Aidan had zero sense of consequence, so going into every scene I purposely disregarded where my character had just been or what had just happened before. I wanted him to be so blinded by what he wanted he wouldn’t realise everything was going wrong because of him. It was a lot of fun to have levity in very serious situations.”

IFTN: What Irish Actor/s have you been most impressed by recently?

KERR: “Cillian Murphy. Need I say more?”

IFTN: What Director or Actor would you most like to work with and why (Irish or international)?

KERR: “I have just finished working for the second time with a director called Zara Hayes and hope to continue the collaboration for years to come. She primarily comes from a documentary background. Not feeling the need to spoon-feed the audience ’story’, she creates a space for actors to live truthfully, partnered with her incredible DOP Matt Gray, it’s an incredibly empowering experience.”

IFTN: We often are our own worst critics. What is your approach to constructive criticism and inward reflection?

KERR: “I used to be incredibly harsh on everything I was in. Then two children came along, so these days I’m lucky if I can even watch any of my shows. I'm sure when they get older I will get back to the self-loathing.”

IFTN: What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career?

“Know your lines well enough, so you could do both parts. Backwards.”

The 20th anniversary of the IFTA Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 7th.
