Ann Skelly Cast in HBO Sci-Fi Drama Series ‘The Nevers’
01 Aug 2019 : News Desk
Ann Skelly
The Irish actress was one of 12 additions to the cast of the sci-fi series, which is being run by 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' creator and 'The Avengers' writer/director Joss Whedon.

Skelly (Kissing Candice, Death and Nightingales) joins lead Laura Donnelly (Outlander) on the project, who was cast in April. Alongside the IFTA nominee are 11 casting additions, including Olivia Williams (Miss Austen Regrets), James Norton (Grantchester), Tom Riley (Dark Heart), Ben Chaplin (The Children Act), Pip Torrens (The Crown), Zackary Momoh (Seven Seconds), Amy Manson (Torchwood), Nick Frost (Hott Fuzz), Rochelle Neil (Death in Paradise), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) and Denis O’Hare (This Is Us).

The Nevers is an epic science fiction drama following a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world. Centred around reckless, impulsive, emotionally damaged protagonist, Amalia True (Donnelly), Skelly will play her closest ally Penance Adair; a devout – yet heretically progressive – Irish girl with a genius for invention. Whilst loving and accepting she is firm in her moral sense and will be guided by what’s right over what’s expedient every time.

As well as serving as the series showrunner, will direct and has co-written The Nevers alongside former Buffy the Vampire Slayer alums Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie. Whedon will also executive produce executive producing with Espenson, Petrie and Bernie Caulfield.

Since her breakout role as Rachel Reid in Irish soap Red Rock, Skelly’s career has moved from strength to strength, including roles in major Irish productions Rebellion and Vikings. In 2018, she was nominated for and IFTA Award for Best Actress for her performance in Aoife McCardle’s Kissing Candice. Skelly was also shortlisted for the IFTA Rising Star Award the same year. Her recent television work includes playing the female lead, Beth Winters, opposite Jamie Dornan and Matthew Rhys in Allan Cubitt’s BBC period drama Death and Nightingales

Skelly has recently wrapped filming on the Samson Films produced Irish feature film, Rose Plays Julie.
