John Carney’s latest feature film, Flora and Son, has been announced to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.
The film received its world premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim and was sold in a bidding war to Apple. It will receive a gala screening at the festival for its Canadian premiere. Showtimes will be announced when the festival releases its full schedule on August 15th.
Flora and Son is written and directed by filmmaker John Carney (Sing Street, Once) and stars Eve Hewson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Orén Kinlan and Jack Reynor. The film follows single mom Flora (Hewson), who is at war with her teenage son, petty thief Max (Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, she rescues a beat-up guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person’s trash can be a family’s salvation.
Flora and Son was shot on location in Dublin, and is produced by Rebecca O’Flanagan and Robert Walpole for Treasure Entertainment, Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for Likely Story and Distressed Films. The film is supported by Screen Ireland in association with FilmNation, Fifth Season, Likely Stor and Distressed Films. Sales are handled by FilmNation.

Also screening at TIFF 2023, is the world premiere of Wicked Little Letters starring Jessie Buckley and Olivia Coleman. The film also stars Alisha Weir, Anjana Vasan, Timothy Spall, Joanna Scanlan, Hugh Skinner, Malachi Kirby, Gemma Jones, Lolly Adefope, and Eileen Atkins. It is set to release in Irish cinemas on 23rd February 2024.
The 48th Toronto International Film Festival will take place September 7th - 17th.
