The documentary comes from Irish filmmaker Laura McGann, and explores the world of freediving.
This is Laura McGann’s second feature documentary, having directed Revolutions, a portrait of women on the forefront of Ireland's Roller Derby scene.
The Deepest Breath follows champion freediver Alessia Zecchini, and Irish adventurer turned expert safety diver Stephen Keenan. They came from very different paths, only to meet at the pinnacle of the competitive freediving world, discovering a shared passion for pushing their limits and forming a powerful relationship.
This documentary takes a look inside one of the most dangerous sports in the world, using everything from raw underwater dive footage to childhood home movies to chronicle Zecchini and Keenan’s lives and careers.
The film was produced by A24, Motive Films, Ventureland and RAW.
The Deepest Breath premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and will be released globally on Netflix on 19 July 2023. The film will also have a limited theatrical release in Ireland from 14 July 2023.
