‘The Young Offenders’ takes €250k in 2016 to beat International Competition at the Mahon Point Box Office
11 Jan 2017 : Katie McNeice
In addition to its national box office takings of over €1M, Peter Foot’s debut feature stands out as the top film of last year to its home audience in the Cork Omniplex, Mahon Point, will screenings continuing to sell out.

‘The Young Offenders’ which is set in Co. Cork has outperformed ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ and ‘Captain America: Civil War’ at the cinema, to name  a few.

Mark Anderson, Omniplex Director:
"I saw a rough cut of The Young Offenders in July and recognized it straight away as an Irish Classic. The economic potential was there too and this small Irish film delivered spectacularly by becoming the highest grossing film in 2016 at our busiest cinema, Cork Omniplex. Everyone associated with the film should feel incredibly proud of this achievement and we were honored to support it. We look forward to continuing our support for Irish Film and bringing customers the next ‘Irish Blockbuster’."

Inspired by Ireland’s biggest cocaine seizure of €440 million off the coast of Cork in 2007, The Young Offenders follows two Cork inner-city teenagers, Conor and Jock, as they embark on a 160km road trip on stolen bikes in the hopes of finding an unrecovered bale of cocaine.

It stars newcomers Chris Walley and Alex Murphy, with comedians Hilary Rose and PJ Gallagher also featuring.

Standout moments for the leading Irish project in 2016 include multiple distribution deals, such as that with Carnaby International Sales & Distribution and XYZ. It has also won a trio of awards at the LA Comedy Festivalfor Best Feature Direction, Best Feature Screenplay and Best Feature Film, as well as the Súil Eile Award at Irish Film Festival London and Best Feature at the 2016 Galway Film Fleadh, which it shared with ‘A Date for Mad Mary’.

It has also garnered praise for its authentic Irish humour, with presenter Graham Norton describing it as “… everything that makes Ireland so special”, and Senior Sales and Acquisitions Manager at Carnaby International Lorriane Hall stating, "It wasn't just funny, it was brilliant".
