Festival Round-Up
17 Aug 2015 : Seán Brosnan
The Underground Film Festival will run from August 22nd – August 29th
‘High Rise’, shot on location in Northern Ireland, added to Toronto line-up, 5th UnderGround Film Festival will take place this month and submissions are now open for the Richard Harris International Film Festival.

Northern Ireland shot ‘High Rise’ selected for Toronto

‘High-Rise’, which filmed on location in Northern Ireland, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs 10-20 September.

‘High-Rise’, directed by Ben Wheatley, from a screenplay by his regular collaborator Amy Jump, is an adaptation of JG Ballard’s classic 1975 British thriller, starring Tom Hiddleston in the lead along with Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss.

‘High-Rise’ has been selected for TIFF’s Platform section, a new programme comprising up to 12 films of high artistic merit that demonstrate a strong directorial vision by significant international filmmakers. Produced by Oscar-winning Jeremy Thomas High-Rise is a dystopian depiction of a society that starts a class war in a high-rise apartment. It filmed in Northern Ireland, including a key location in Bangor, in 2014 and received funding from the Northern Ireland Screen Fund supported by Invest NI and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

5th UnderGround Film Festival will take place August 22nd-August 29th

The 5th annual UnderGround Film Festival will take place between August 22nd and August 29th at venues in and around Cork City. Screening 120 short and feature films in diverse categories such as Local, National, International, Spanish, Drama, Comedy, Documentary, Animation, Experimental, Horror/Sci-Fi and Music Video's.

Supported by Rising Sons Brewery, the UnderGround Film Festival is one of the only Film Festivals in the country to actively give to charity and this year will once again continue to contribute to its long term partners; the ISPCC.

This year’s events programme is the largest to date, with submissions having come from 35 countries but according to Festival Director Darren O’Mahony, the most exciting events are still the wide selection of local made short films.

"This year has seen a huge surge in submission numbers, we took in almost three times as many entries as last year and those films have come from all across the globe. Shorts made in Cork though will always take pride of place with us with the quality of work on par with any other. The talent is here and we are delighted to encourage it as much as we can".

2015 also sees the introduction of the festival's Inspire Awards, which aims to honour Irish Film industry veterans who have successfully managed to carve out careers in a notoriously difficult profession. Being honoured this year are Actress Victoria Smurfit (Ballykissangel, The Beach, Dracula, One Upon a Time) and Writer/Director Terry McMahon who's highly successful film ‘Patrick's Day’ recently won three awards at the IFTA Film & Drama Awards.

Richard Harris Film Festival call for entries

The Richard Harris International Film Festival submission process is now open.

RHIFF strongly believe that the Irish film-making Diaspora should be encouraged to showcase their work in Ireland. They are currently the only Film Festival in Ireland which specifically encourages Irish Filmmakers abroad to return and showcase their work.

As an international film festival, they have categories open to non-Irish film-makers and welcome entries from all over the world.

The festival will take place will take place 23rd – 25th October.

Screenings include a Gala opening night screening, films chosen from International entries (with priority given to entries from the Irish Diaspora) and a Richard Harris retrospective screening.

Their networking evening on Saturday is subscribed to well in advance as this is your opportunity to get down to business with fellow industry professionals - (both creative and representative). Their hosts in 2014 were Ella Harris and Jamie Harris, (Marvel Agents of Shield, American Horror Story).

This year, the festival in association with Limerick School of Acting has announced the inclusion of a one minute monologue competition in the festival line up this October.

RHIFF are accepting entries via FilmFreeway in the following categories:

  • Short Film
  • Feature Film
  • Monologue Competition

There are three categories for short film:

  • Midwest Short Film Showcase
  • National and International short film showcase
  • Newport Beach Film Festival Competition – their short-listed films in this category are eligible for selection for the Newport Beach Film Festival Irish Spotlight 2016
