TG4’s Christmas Crackers for 2014

The TG4 Christmas schedule has plenty to light up the holiday season with music, live sport and nostalgic documentaries.

There are new documentaries such as ‘Liam Clancy, Mo Chara’ on Christmas Day, which sees family and friends share fond memories of this much-loved singer. Another documentary ‘Ó Ghaillimh go dtí an Ghraonlainn’ brings the audience on an amazing journey from Galway to Greenland in a cramped 49ft yacht. In ‘Roger Corman i gConamara’ we hear how the king of the Hollywood B movies came to set up a full-blown film studio on the west coast of Ireland.

‘Mary O’Hara’ explores the life of harpist and singer whose tumultuous life has included a spell as a nun, chart-topping success and tragedy. We take another musical journey in ‘An Godfather - Bryan Rooney’ which looks at the life of the legendary Leitrim-born but London-based master of the traditional music. ‘Ní Dhúnfar Scoil Dún Chaoin’ looks at how a well-orchestrated campaign in the early 1970s saved a West Kerry national school from closure.

For drama, in ‘Ros na Rún’, Eoin’s plans of revenge become clearer and Evan thinks he may be about to experience a Christmas miracle when Niamh calls him over to talk.

There will also be a brand new series of ‘Ó Cuisine’, in which audiences will be treated to some cultural festive feasts. Irish traditions of Christmas are discussed in ‘Béaloideas Beo’.

Many Irish country music stars feature on TG4 this Christmas including Daniel O’Donnell, Nathan Carter, Derek Ryan, Susan McCann, Philomena Begley, Mary Duff and Foster & Allen. There will also be music from Paddy Casey, The Riptide Movement, Javin James and Cathy Davey in Whelans @ 25 as they ring in the New Year.

Two acclaimed Irish musicians Liam Ó Maonlaí and Paddy Keenan cover thousands of miles of stunning terrain from Timbuktu to Mali as they go in search of other musical roots in ‘Ceol agus Dambé i Mali’.

For sport, you have another chance to see some of the many epic encounters of 2014 such as both the hurling and football All-Ireland Finals. There will also be live rugby action from Rugby Pro12 Munster v Leinster from Thomond Park on St. Stephen’s Day and Connacht v Munster from the Sportsground on New Year’s Day.

A range of films from classics to westerns to contemporary international cinema will keep the discerning viewer happy. Among these are ‘Christmas Cottage’ starring Peter O’Toole, ‘The Secret of Kells’ which was specially revoiced for TG4 and stars Brendan Gleeson as the voice of Abbot Ceallach, and the film version of ‘An Bronntanas’, a contemporary thriller set against the backdrop of the Connemara Coastline. ‘Meet The Fockers’, ‘Up in Arms’, ‘I Am David’, ‘Nutty Professor II’ and ‘Atonement’ will also be screened.
