Irish feature documentary ‘Dreaming The Quiet Man’ will screen at this year's American Film Institute as part of the European Union Film Showcase.
“It’s a big thrill, that fact that it was chosen is a great recognition. It’s been gathering momentum” said Director Sé Merry Doyle, “The plan is that its going to get a general release in Ireland, and a limited release in the UK to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the making of ‘The Quiet Man’. It’s been building up a bit of a reputation with each festival.”
Narrated by Gabriel Byrne, the film looks at the filming of the classic ‘The Quiet Man’. Maureen O' Hara gives a powerful insight into the director John Ford and her co-star John Wayne, describing the film as “love letter to Ireland”.
Produced by Loopline Films, the film features Martin Scorsese who explains how 'The Quiet Man' influenced his film Raging Bull. Also interviewed for the documentary, Jim Sheridan suggests that in Ireland the film can be unfairly criticized for stage Irishness, but is a far more subtle and intelligent film, while Peter Bogdanovich also spoke about John Ford's obsession with his Irish identity.
'Dreaming The Quiet Man' was co-funded by BSÉ/IFB, TG4 and BAI. The AFI EU Film Showcase this year features 44 films from EU member states from November 3rd - 22nd.
