Nora Jane Noone To Open Sligo Short Festival

Rising Irish actress Nora Jane Noone, star of ‘The Descent’, ‘The Magdalene Sisters’ and ‘Coronation Street’, is to officially open the inaugural Sligo Short Film Festival (16th – 18th of September).

Both festival organisers and filmmakers are

eagerly anticipating the excitement generated by the Sligo festival, which is the first Irish festival devoted to digital short filmmaking. Visting actress Nora Jane Noone stars in Michael Chang ‘s short film ‘The Listener’, which will be screened as part of the Short Fiction programme on Sunday afternoon. The Mayor of Sligo, Rosaleen O’Grady, will also join the celebrations and officially introduce and welcome the festival to Sligo town.

The festival programme includes a wide range of short films from amateur, documentary to short fiction. Public screenings begin on the 17th of September at 10.30am with ten films from the amateur category. Highlights of the documentary programme include the South African short documentary ‘Today is Tomorrow’ and the Irish docos ‘The Island’ (Michael Carolan), ‘twill be this or another one’ (Tom Burke), 'Spirit' (Ronan Gallagher) and ‘Useless Dog’ (Ken Wardrop). The short fiction lineup includes Arjun Chatterji’s award winning ‘Camera Solitude’ (India/UK), Emmet Scanlon’s ‘Cinema’, Fred Aidroos’ ‘Two Stops to Bank’ and Ed Roe’s humorous ‘Call Register’ (UK).

Award winning filmmakers, director Brendan Muldowney and producer Conor Barry, will be in town on Saturday to introduce their short films ‘Innocence’ and ‘The Ten Steps’. Afterwards the audience will be invited to participate in an open floor Q&A session with the producer and director.

The Festival award ceremony will take place at the Gaiety Cinema at 7pm on Sunday the 17th and will include the screening of award winning films.

Film category tickets are 5 euro can be purchased from the Model and Niland (071 9141495) where all festival screenings take place, and third wave music (071 9147811).

The Sligo Short Film Festival is sponsored by the Arts Council, Stella Artois, The Model and Niland Gallery, The Garavogue Bar, The Gaeity Cinema and a host of other local businesses and institutions.
