Set designer and Oscar-winner Josie McAvin, actor John Lynch and scriptwriter Paul Laverty are this year's practitioners at the Fleadh's Masterclasses.
The 16th Galway Film Fleadh kicks off on July 6th, bringing
a week-long celebration of the best in Irish and
International contemporary cinema. Each year, the Fleadh
hosts a number of workshops with some of the world's
foremost film practitioners and this year is no exception.
This year’s Actors Masterclasses will be presented by
Northern Irish actor, John Lynch. Lynch first came to
prominence with his breakthrough role opposite Helen Mirren
in Cal (1984). He played The Guildford Four's Gerry Conlon
in Jim Sheridan's award-winning In The Name of the Father
(1993), followed by Nothing Personal (1995) and Some
Mother’s Son (1996). In 1998 he starred alongside Gwyenth
Paltrow in the UK comedy Sliding Doors (1998), played the
eponymous Northern football legend in Best (2000) and more
recently starred with Pierce Brosnan in Evelyn (2002).
During his masterclass John Lynch will explore practical
aspects of establishing and developing an actor's career in
the international film and television industry - starting
out as an actor, working with casting directors, securing an
agent and preparing for an audition. The class will be
facilitated by one of Europe’s leading casting directors,
John Hubbard. The masterclass is run in conjunction with
Screen Training Ireland, and admission is by application
only. It will take place on Saturday the 10th of July, costs
€75 and is aimed at those developing a professional career
in acting for film and television.
Paul Laverty – Ken Loach’s resident screenwriter - will
present the Scriptwriter’s Masterclass in conjunction with
The Huston School of Digital Media. Prior to the class,
participants will be sent excerpts from the script of My
Name is Joe. These excerpts will be the starting points for
a discussion which will explore Laverty’s approach to
screenwriting. Again, admission is by application only. The
Masterclass will be suitable for participants who are
pursuing a career in writing for film and television. It
costs €50 and will take place on Wednesday the 7th of July.
The Fleadh's final masterclass is with Irish
set-designer, Josie McAvin. Josie has been nominated for
three Oscars and in 1985 received the Oscar for her work on
Out Of Africa. Her incredible career spans 50 years and she
has worked with such notable directors as David Lean, Sydney
Pollak, John Huston and our own Jim Sheridan and Neil
Jordan. Her talk promises to be a highlight of the festival
and will take place on Wednesday the 7th of July at 2pm in
the Town Hall Theatre. This discussion is open to the
public, and to attend, you simply buy a ticket to see Out of
Africa as part of the festival (which preceeds the
discussion) from the Town Hall Theatre (091 569777). The
ticket for the film will allow admittance to Josie McAvin’s
discussion.
