Car Crash: The DeLorean Story is the latest documentary special by Mint Productions and BBC Northern Ireland focusing on the fascinating tale of the rise and fall of legendary car maker John DeLorean.
Actor Adrian Dunbar narrates this one hour documentary which examines the events on the 19th October 1982, at the Sheraton Plaza, Los Angeles. Grainy footage showed businessman John DeLorean taking delivery of a mysterious suitcase before being arrested by the FBI. Back in Northern Ireland, his devoted workforce, recruited from hard-line Loyalist and Republican areas, looked on in disbelief.
The core of the film is about the people
who worked in DeLorean’s Belfast factory.
Talking to
many of those workers who felt history
had misjudged John. They believed that he
had really tried to help Belfast at a time
when many industries were either
shunning or withdrawing their investment
in Belfast.
Jezz Wright, producer at Mint says of meeting John DeLorean “He talked
about his theory that the British
Government colluded with the FBI to get
him 'out of the picture'. He believes that
British secret service agents bumped off
his business partner - the Lotus sports car
founder Colin Chapman. He was bitter
and angry and refused to accept any
blame for his company’s failings.”
The programme will be broadcast on BBC1 Wednesday the 19th of May at 10.35pm.
