Irish composer Brian Byrne has won two awards at the highly prestigious World Soundtrack Awards for his work on Glenn Close’s Irish co-production ‘Albert Nobbs’.
Byrne, who hails from Navan, Co Meath, won the prize for Discovery of the Year for his score to ‘Albert Nobbs’.
He also beat off competition from Mary J Blige, Madonna and Florence + The Machine to take the award for Best Original Song for ‘Lay Your Head Down,’ which featured lyrics by Glenn Close and was performed by Sinéad O'Connor and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
The results were announced on Saturday at the closing night of Ghent International Film Festival.
This follows an IFTA win in February and a place on the Oscar long list for the ‘Albert Nobbs’ score and a Golden Globe nomination for ‘Lay Your Head Down’.
‘Albert Nobbs’ was shot in Dublin in 2010/2011, with five-time Oscar-winner Close starring as a woman disguised as a man, opposite Janet McTeer. Irish actors Brendan Gleeson, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Bronagh Gallagher and Jonathan Rhys Meyers all had roles in the film.
Rodrigo García directed from a script written by Close. Alan Moloney of Parallel Films produced with Bonnie Curtis, Julie Lynn and Close. The film was nominated for several IFTA Awards this year, taking home four in sound, music, makeup and acting categories.
