Shooting of new Irish film ‘The Runway’ has got underway in Goleen and Schull, Co. Cork. The film is written and directed by Ian Power, produced by Macdara Kelleher and stars Mexican actor Demián Bichir (Che, Weeds) alongside Irish actress Kerry Condon (Angela's Ashes, Rome).
‘The Runway’ is loosely inspired by the true events whereby a South American pilot crashed his airplane into a field near Mallow in Cork in 1983. Against all odds, the people of a depressed town called Dromoleen come together to build a runway, fix up a plane and get the pilot home. And in doing so caught, briefly, the imagination of a nation.
The film also features lead performances from newcomer Jaime Kierans and veteran Scottish actor James Cosmo (Braveheart). Supporting cast includes Pat Laffan (The Running Mate), Mark Doherty (A Film with Me in It), Donnacha Crowley (Kings) and John Kavanagh (The Tudors).
Co-producers of the project are Brendan McDonald and Bernard Michaux of Lucil Films with financing from Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, the Luxembourg Film Fund and Film I Vast. ‘The Runway’ is being shot on RED One format by DOP P.J Dillon and Ray Ball is in charge of production design. The shoot is planned to wrap on September 18th.
