This year’s Galway Film Fleadh, which takes place from 8th – 13th July 2008, is set to host a selection of industry panel seminars on topics including children’s programming, documentary directing and RTÉ’s latest commissioning round, in addition to the annual Real Deal, Film Fair and Pitching Award events.
On Friday 11th July at 10.00am, ACE in association with FAS Screen Training Ireland, will host a seminar entitled ‘Inter Viewing: Who has the Rights?’, which will explore the ‘do it yourselves’ mode of film distribution and what has become known as ‘netribution’. Tutors will include Ed Guiney from Element Films, producer Martina Niland and producer / editor Josh Caldwell. This event costs €50 and takes place in the Radisson SAS Hotel.
On Wednesday July 9th from 10am - 1pm, Galmac will hold a demonstration of Final Cut Studio software in the Harbour Hotel, while on Friday 11th July at 1.30pm, Screen Producers Ireland will host a free panel event on Children’s Programming in The Townhall Theatre. A panel including Jens Bachem, Director of Digital Outlook and Gary Pope, Director of Kids Industries will discuss the latest trend in children’s programming and how to captivate a young audience.
RTÉ Commissioning will give a presentation on Friday July 11th on the output from their areas and the opportunities available in the current commissioning round at RTÉ. Ray McCarthy, Commissioning Editor Regional, Mairead Ni Nuadhain, Commissioning Editor Irish Language, Multicultural and Education and Deputy Head of Scheduling John McMahon will be in attendance.
On Saturday July 12th, Special Effects Director Gerry Johnston will give a talk on his new book ‘Lights, Camera Dynamite: The Adventures of a Special Effects Director’ in the Townhall Theatre while on Sunday July 13th, Screen Directors Guild of Ireland will host a Director in Dialogue: International Documentary Special event, with documentary makers Jane Darke (The Art of Cathing Lobsters), David Kinsella (A Beautfiul Tragedy), Geoffrey Smith (The English Surgeon) and Donal McIntyre (A Very British Gangster) in attendance.
The Fleadh’s annual film financing seminar ‘The Real Deal’ takes place on Thursday 10th July at the Radisson SAS, with seminar talk including ‘Far Away Up Close’, which will explore Ireland’s co-production potential with international countries; ‘The Global Cartoon Business’ and ‘Undressing Hollywood’, which looks at how the US film industry really works. Sessions will be chaired by the IFB’s Simon Perry and Magma Films’ Ralph Christians.
Finally, the Pitching Award, which will see five aspiring filmmakers pitch their idea to a panel of industry panels, returns this year as well as the Fleadh’s Film Fair, which gives filmmakers a chance to have face to face meetings with financiers, distributors and producers.
