Paul Laverty and Rod Stoneman will host a masterclass in screenwriting at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh at the Huston School of Digital Media on Wednesday the 6th of July.
Paul Laverty is a highly accomplished screenwriter. He obtained a Philosophy degree at the Gregorian University in Rome and later became a fully qualified practicing lawyer concentrating on civil and criminal law cases. In the mid eighties he traveled to Nicaragua, and worked for a Nicaraguan domestic human rights organisation which provided hard evidence of human rights abuses. He traveled to the war-zones and obtained corroborated eye witness accounts which were past on to international human rights organisations. After his time in Central America Paul made contact with British director Ken Loach as a result of which he wrote ‘Carla's Song’. Further scripts directed by Loach includes ‘My Name is Joe’, ‘Bread and Roses’ and ‘Sweet Sixteen’ and their latest film ‘Ae Fond Kiss’.
The class is aimed those who are pursuing a career in writing for film and television. Prior to the class, participants will be sent excerpts from the script of 'My Name is Joe'. These excerpts will be the starting points for a discussion which will explore Paul Laverty’s approach to screenwriting.
Admission is by application only and pending a successful application, the cost of the course is EUR50, which will include access to a cinema screening of My Name is Joe. The discussion will be chaired by Rod Stoneman, Director of the Huston Film School and will take place at the Huston Film School on Wednesday the 6th of July at 2.30pm. The screening of ‘My Name is Joe’ will take place at 11am on the morning of the masterclass.
Deadline for receipt of applications is the Friday the 25th of June. Successful applicants will be advised before Tuesday the 29th of June.
