'Veronica Guerin' wowed Irish audiences last night at the world premiere of the film, in Dublin's Savoy cinema. Star of the film, Cate Blanchett, who plays the part of the murdered journalist, was in attendance with her co-stars Gerard McSorley, Ciaran Hinds, Brenda Fricker and Colin Farrell. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joel Schumacher were both also present - Bruckheimer is currently is Ireland producing Disney's 'King Arthur'.
After a brief welcome from Buena Vista's Brendan McCaul, Bruckheimer and Schumacher, the audience was treated to the first public screening of the film which filmed in Ireland last year. After the film, Schumacher complemented the Irish crew for their great good humour, saying that they were the best crew to have around when its raining. Both Schumacher and Bruckheimer welcomed on stage cast and crew, including costume designer Joan Bergin, Irish co-producer Morgan O'Sullivan, DoP Brendan Galvin, editor David Gamble, production designer Nathan Crowley, and casting agents Frank and Nuala Moiselle.
As well as Cate Blanchett, Gerard McSorley, Ciaran Hinds, Brenda Fricker and Colin Farrell, cast on stage included Garret Keogh, David Herlihy, Karl Shiels, Alan Devine, Gerry O'Brien and Charlotte Bradley. Cate Blanchett was greeted on stage with a standing ovation, which continued when Veronica Guerin's mother Bernie, husband Cathal and son Jimmy were then welcomed on stage by Schumacher.
The invited audience moved to the State Apartments of Dublin Castle for a reception hosted by the Minister for Arts, John O'Donoghue TD.
The film, distributed by Buena Vista, is screening in the Galway Film Fleadh on Wednesday 9 July, and will open nationwide on July 11. The film is released in UK on August 1 and in Europe and US in the autumn.
