The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has announced the allocation of a total of €11m in funding in the first round of the Sound & Vision Broadcasting Funding Scheme, with a total of 37 successful television projects. The winning projects were chosen from 166 applications (82TV/84Radio). The first round of the scheme will allocate €10.5million to the selected television projects and €0.5million to 45 radio initiatives. €6.5m or 62% of the total budget allocation will fund programmes in the Irish language.
Of the applications approved for funding in television, nine applications for English language programming will receive funding to the value of €2.5m, one application for adult literacy will receive €1.5m and twenty-seven applications will receive €6.5m for programmes in the Irish language and bi-lingual programming.
The highest awards went to National Adult Literacy Agency (€1,530,467) for their RTE educational production ‘Really Useful Guide to Words and Numbers’, Telegael Teoranta (€1,529,020) for their teenage Irish language drama series ‘Aifric’ and Rubicon Films (€750,000) for the production of a new comedy drama series ‘The Running Mate’.
From the 37 television awards, a total of 26 documentary projects were successful. Projects included in the list were GMTV’s ‘Event Pass’ (€227,128), Loopline Films’ ‘Foley - Ghost of the Empire’ (€134,930) and Dearg Films’ ‘Uachtaran’ (€385,526). Two animation projects won awards; ‘Brendan & The Book of Kells’ and ‘Kids' Stories International’, garnering €492,178 and €300,000 respectively; and feature films in receipt of funding include; Newgrange Pictures (€600,000) for ‘Kings’, ROSG (€660,698) for their feature ‘Cré na Cille’ and Janey Films (€500,000) for ‘32A’.
Speaking about the announcement Chief Executive of the BCI, Michael O’Keeffe said “We are delighted to announce such a significant level of support for new programming which will increase the availability of programmes on Irish culture, heritage and experience and adult literacy to audiences in the State. In particular the funding being made available for Irish language programming is to be welcomed. Both the level and quality of applications received in this round underlines the interest in and commitment to the development of innovative programming in Ireland.”
It is anticipated that a second call for applications to the Sound & Vision scheme will be launched in mid-late March.
