Filmbase ‘Bloom’ Screening & Production Workshop

Filmbase, in assoc. with Stoney Road Films, have announced a special screening, workshop & Q&A with ‘Bloom’ director Sean Walsh.

‘Bloom’ is the only only the second feature film adaptation of James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ ever made for the screen. It stars Stephen Rea and Angeline Ball as Leopold and Molly Bloom. Ball won Best actress at the Irish Film & Television Awards in 2003 for her part in the film.

The screening and Q&A will be combined with an intensive workshop on Production and Direction for medium budget films using ‘Bloom’ as an example with the producers and director of the film.

The film will be screened on the Saturday 11th of June at 11.15am, in the IFI, followed by a Q&A session after with director Sean Walsh.

Screenings and Q&A will be charged at €12, and €10 (students/unemployed).

In tandem with the Filmbase/Stoney Road Films are hosting a special afternoon workshop on direction and production to be held in Filmbase.

The Workshop will take place at 2.30pm after a break from the screening and will cost €45 excluding screening and €50 including screening.

The workshop will cover the following elements:

Direction/Writing:
• How the greatest novel of the 20th Century was turned into a workable screenplay.
• Includes dissecting the chapters and adaptation to filmic form.
• How to deal with actors and the auditioning process.
• The relationship between the director and actors in the creation of the characters.
• Visualising the locations and sets and the atmospheric drawings and designs of the designer, and shooting a period drama in a modern day city.
• Working on the music for the film, and the composer_s story of LA producer David Kahne.

Production
• Finding the money for an ambitious project with high production values.
• Finding the crew and building the relationships to allow what would normally be a high budget film to be shot for considerably less than it should have cost.
• Working the budget and cash flow.
• Hi Def versus 35mm and the processes involved.
• Post production and graphics, sound and music.

The Workshop will cost €45 excluding screening and €50 including screening.
