Piranha Bar Opens Doors for Culture Night
27 Sep 2018 :
Hosting a series of talks, live demonstrations and tours of the building, hybrid studio Piranha Bar welcomed over 50 guests into their iconic Georgian building on Culture Night.

These talks and exhibitions covered a wide range of the industry including graphic design, editing, animation and directing as well as a live motion capture demonstration.

As guests entered through the recognizable pink door of 37 Fitzwilliam Square, they were greeted by Paradon, Catherine and Shortie Giraffe, three animated characters designed at Piranha Bar, being controlled by the motion capture team, which included Piranha Bar's very own production coordinator Lizzie Jones in a full X sens motion tracking suit. The team were not shy about showing off the suit's accurate capturing capabilities as their 'actor' performed a multitude of extravagant dance routines, all being mirrored onto characters on the screen.

Creator of the children's cartoon series 'Mya Go', Alan Foley, began the night's talks with a presentation that included a seasonally-appropriate exclusive screening of 'Christmas Tree', Mya Go's soon to be Christmas special, followed by a brief summary of Mya Go's history and how the series went from a t-shirt design to a worldwide animated series.

This was followed by Sean King, one of Piranha Bar's in-house editors, breaking down a scene from ‘A Wild Irish Year’. Sean showed the crowd of students and industry members two separate versions of the one scene, analysing the changes that were made, all while describing the creative process of editing and illustrating the importance of even the most minute details.

The visitors were then brought through the contemporary interior of the classic Dublin building to the basement where young, up-and-coming Irish director, James Doherty presented a case study of his recent award-winning short film ‘Breathe’.

To conclude the night, Piranha Bar co-founder Gavin Kelly took the audience through the rich history of Piranha Bar, showing examples of some of the breath-taking international projects that they have been a part of, including their most recent involvement in the redesign of the iconic Coco Pops animated world. Gavin also provided guests with a masterclass of all things graphics related, including 3D modelling, CGI, the process of creating a treatment and much more.

Throughout the night visitors were also welcomed in to different rooms throughout the building to see the inner workings of the company including the flame department, the central apparatus room and an online edit suite.

Speaking about the success of the night, Piranha Bar's MD, Dave Burke said:

“You know we've been doing this for so long now that you never really stop to think how different it is from the everyday. It gave me great pleasure to see so many people call into Piranha Bar for a peek under the hood. The level of enthusiasm and interest in what we do was fantastic.

For me also, seeing the wide range of activities that Piranha Bar are now involved in brought home just how much we have evolved over the years. Our best years are ahead of us...”
