Ray is a graduate in Communications from Dublin City University and holds a Master in Fine Arts degree in TV production from Brooklyn College, New York. Upon graduation, Ray worked as a Promotions and Features Producer for WNYC-TV in New York. He established and managed the independent TV production and distribution company IBC in New York. He originated and produced the successful series Stateside, which was commissioned by the Independent Productions Unit. He was a Senior Producer/Director at RTÉ Cork since 1996 and contributed to the development of TV production in Cork and was responsible for originating and producing the ongoing programmes Streetwise and Out of the Blue. Ray co-ordinated the re-launch of the alternative music programme No Disco and was executive producer of the successful Telethon '98.
