#Emmy2020: Screen Ireland and Minister Martin congratulate Andrew Scott and creative team behind Normal People

The Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht, Catherine Martin, T.D. and Screen Ireland have shared their congratulates to Irish actors Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, director Lenny Abrahamson, writers Sally Rooney and Alice Birch, and casting agent Louise Kiely on their Emmy nominations for Black Mirror and Normal People.

Scott has been recognised for his performance in Black Mirror and nominated in the Best Guest Actor category, while Element Pictures’ global sensation, Normal People has received an incredible 4 Emmy nominations. Paul Mescal has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in A Limited Series, Lenny Abrahamson for Outstanding Directing For A Limited Series, Sally Rooney & Alice Birch for Outstanding Writing For A Limited Series and Louise Kiely for Outstanding Casting For A Limited Series.

Speaking about the nominations, Minister Martin said:

“I am delighted to hear that the widely acclaimed Normal People was nominated for four Emmy awards this evening. I pass on my heartiest congratulations to the nominees and to all the team at Element Pictures. TV Drama is hugely important to the Irish audiovisual sector and a key focus of the Audiovisual Action Plan.

“Screen Ireland committed significant funding and resources to TV Drama production last year and Normal People was the first large scale indigenous project that Screen Ireland supported with this fund,” Martin continued. “Last week, as part of the jobs stimulus package, I announced an additional €3 million of TV Drama funding to be made available. That additional funding will help encourage Irish TV drama and will – I hope - provide opportunities for many more Irish produced TV dramas of the calibre of Normal People.”

“The critical success of the show reminds us of the intrinsic value of Irish storytelling on screen. We are delighted to see Irish creative talent recognised and celebrated at the highest level on the international stage.  Screen Ireland’s is committed to further building and supporting the Irish television drama sector into the future.

“We are also delighted to see Irish actor Andrew Scott receive a nomination for his role in Black Mirror in the Best Guest Actor in a Drama category,” she added.

Normal People is an Element Pictures production for Hulu and BBC Three, adapted from the award-winning novel by Sally Rooney. The series has been a record-breaking hit for both its UK and Irish broadcast, with over 2.5 million views on RTÉ and 38 million requests on BBC iPlayer in the UK, the most successful show for BBC Three to date. The series is funded under Screen Ireland’s first TV Drama Production fund, which aims to drive the expansion of the indigenous TV drama production sector in Ireland.
