The Visual Effects Society Awards honoured fantasy series ‘Game of Thrones’ for the acclaimed ninth episode of its sixth season, ‘Battle of the Bastards’, as well as animated feature film ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ voiced by NI talent Art Parkinson.
Other titles honoured at the ceremony were ‘The Jungle Book’, the latest John Lewis commercial ‘Buster the Boxer’, ‘Moana’ ‘Breaking Point’, ‘Deepwater Horizon’, ‘Doctor Strange’, ‘Finding Dory’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ‘Unchartered 4’ and ‘Black Sails’.
‘Game of Thrones’ received five awards in total for ‘Battle of the Bastards’:
- Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode
- Outstanding Animated Performance in an Episode or Real-Time Project
- Outstanding Created Environment in an Episode, Commercial, or Real-Time Project
- Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Episode, Commercial, or Real-Time Project
- Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Episode
Both ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ have received an impressive haul of awards in the last number of months, with ‘Game of Thrones’ honoured Outstanding Visual Effects at the Emmy awards ceremony in September 2016. This award, in addition to those for Outstanding Drama Series, Best Drama Writing and Best Directing brought the series to a record-breaking thirty eight Emmy wins.
Over six hundred VFX shots for the sixth season of the HBO series was completed by Dublin-based Screen Scene VFX, with over one hundred and fifty of these going to the award winning episode.
‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ was recently announced as a nominated title in the category of Best Animated Feature in the upcoming Academy Awards, with lead voice actor Art Parkinson also nominated at the Annie Awards last week for an Outstanding Achievement of Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production.
