Cillian Murphy in Broken
Irish actor Cillian Murphy’s forthcoming feature ‘Broken’ will open next month’s Cannes Critics’ Week, which runs from May 17 - 25 as part of the Cannes Film Festival. Based on the novel by Daniel Clay, the Rufus Norris-directed drama has been adapted for the screen by Irish writer Mark O’Rowe (Perrier’s Bounty, Intermission). It tells the story of an 11-year-old girl living in North London whose innocence is shattered when she witnesses a violent assault.

It will screen out of competition in Cannes on May 17, with seven features and 10 short and medium length films from countries such as France, Germany, India and Brazil set to screen in competition over the course of the week.

Funded by the British Film Institute and the BBC, ‘Broken’ is the directorial debut from British actor Norris and also features Tim Roth (Lie to Me), Rory Kinnear (Vexed), Robert Emms (War Horse), Zana Marjanovic (Snow), Bill Milner (X-Men: First Class) and first time actress Eloise Laurence amongst its cast.

Shot on location in London last October and November, the film also features a score by Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn and was shot by director of photography Rob Hardy using 335mm. The film was produced by Britain’s Cuba Pictures Production with Dixie Linder, Nick Marston, Tally Garner and Bill Kenwright serving as producers.
