Victoria Smurfit's New Boxing Drama In Development with Fired Up Films & eOne
28 Nov 2018 : Nathan Griffin
British production companies Entertainment One and Fired Up Films are currently developing two scripted projects, one of which is written by Irish actress Victoria Smurfit.

The independent drama is being developed by producer Jon-Barrie Waddell (‘Million Dollar Car’), Simon Howley, former chief of Kowalski Media and Smurfit (‘Once Upon a Time’, ‘The Mentalist’) who wrote the script.

‘The Box’ is a comedy drama series centred around a female boxing gym that is situated on the North Coast of Ireland. The series is about the unlikely friendships of a group of “odd ducks” in the rain soaked, coastal town of Portstewart.

Speaking about the project, Victoria Smurfit told IFTN:

“I am over the moon to be in development with Eone and Fired Up films. This is a project I’ve loved and worked on for a while and am delighted that never giving up can work!”

The eOne project is being supported by Northern Ireland Screen.

Speaking about the project and working with Smurfit, Howley told Deadline:

“We’ve been working with Victoria in LA on a factual series and she shared the idea for The Box. We loved it and have been developing it with her for over a year. She’s a great writer; we are so pleased to be working with her. We want to make positive, feel-good films about life in Northern Ireland, and prove great real-life drama can be set here – and that it’s not just a world of fantasy and cops.”

Speaking about the first-look deal between Fired Up Films & eOne, Howley added:

“We both come from a factual programming background and it’s a natural step for Fired Up Films to exploit that in the burgeoning scripted space – we already have a series in development with the BBC which initially came about from a true crime documentary we were developing.”

The second scripted project in development is ‘Catch Me a Killer’, a serial killer thriller based on a book by Oscar Pistorius’ aunt, Micki – South Africa’s first serial killer profiler.
