The N4 takes you directly from Dublin to Sligo.The Dublin-Sligo railway line serves the county with stations at Ballymote, Collooney and Sligo. Bus Eireann provide services to County Sligo from Dublin, Galway, Donegal and surrounding counties. Sligo has its own small airport located outside Sligo town

KEY LOCATIONS

 RURAL

Ox Mountains
Dominating the western side of the county are the vast range of the Ox Mountains with the highest peak at Knockalong and containing the stunning Lough Easky. The area provides two main walking trails with contrasting boggy and rocky landscapes.


Cairns Hill Forest Park
This park outside Sligo has a trail to the top of Cairns Hill with good views of the surrounding Countryside.


Benbulben
A mountain made famous by the poetry of Yeats, it peaks at 1730ft. This striking flat-topped mountain manages to look different from every viewpoint. It is the most spectacular peak in the Dartry Mountain range.


Hill of Knocknarea
To the west of Sligo town lies the Hill of Knocknarea which offers fine views. At the top of the hill lies Maeve’s Mound, a huge cairn, in commemoration of Queen Maeve who reigned in the first century of the Christian era. Ireland’s largest site of megalithic remains can be found in the surrounding area.


Bricklieve
This is a lightly populated range of mountains, containing numerous prehistoric sites.

 COASTAL

Coastline
Sligo’s coastline consists of low-lying cliffs and numerous beaches such as Strandhill, Streedagh, Mullaghmore, Inniscrone and Rosses Point. Scenic attractions include Lough Gill, near Sligo town and Lough Arrow. Streedagh in particular offers a fantastic strand with accessible caves.

Lough Gill
5 miles long and 2 miles wide, surrounded on three sides by wooded mountain slopes, and connected to Sligo town by a 2 mile stretch of river. In the lake itself the most prominent islands are the beautifully wooded Cottage Island, with the ruins of an ancient Church, the larger Church Island also with the remains of a Church, and the tiny island of Innisfree.

Drumcliffe Bay
Drumcliffe bay lies north of Rosses Point, an area of fine sandy beaches. Nearby are the Dartry Mountains, where the most prominent summits are Truskmore (2113 feet), Benbulben (1730 feet) and King's Mountain (1527 feet).

Glencar Lough
Seven miles north of Sligo in the Dartry Mountains is an area of beautiful scenery with the spectacular Glencar Waterfall and wooded mountain slopes.

Split Rock
Situated near Easky, this glacial fissure is ten feet high. Legend has it that Fionn MacCumhal threw it from the top of the Ox Mountains.

Mullaghmore Peninsula
This point has views of Benbulben and the Dartry and Donegal mountains. Inishmurray Island, just offshore has a monastic settlement and an early Christian graveyard.

Lough Arrow
This lake is situated in the East of the county surrounded by hills. The Curlew Mountains are nearby. The lake is filled with little islets. It is a popular fishing and boating area.

Coney Island
At Sligo Bay, there is a crossing to Coney Island, which has good bird-watching and beaches.

 HISTORICAL

Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery
This fascinating area contains stone circles, dolmens and standing stones and may even be older than Newgrange. Much of the area has, however, been ruined by quarrying.


Drumcliff
This area is famous as the burial place of W.B.Yeats, but there is also an ancient monastic here.


Heapstown Cairn
The last resting place of Ailil, brother of King Niall of Tara, Heapstown Cairn is a huge neolithic passage tomb. The spot has good views of the surrounding countryside.


Carrowkeel
Located in the Bricklieve Mountains, this fantastic viewpoint is the site of a Bronze Age Cemetary containing dolmens, stone age huts and cairns, one similar to Newgrange. Also in this area are the caves of Keshorran Hill.


Sligo Abbey
The ruins of Sligo Abbey, founded in 1252, consist of a nave and choir with a central tower. It contains an ornate alter and beautiful lancet windows.


Hazelwood House
Located near Lough Gill , Hazelwood House is one of the largest Georgian Houses in the county.


Lissadell House
This estate is open to the public during the summer and is now a forestry and wildlife bird reserve. It was the home of the Gore-Booth’s. Constance Gore Booth was sentenced to death by the British in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising. The house is Greek-Revival and still retains its old world ambience


Parke’s Castle
Situated on the Leitrim side of Lough Gill, this 17th century fortress was built by Robert Parke. You can reach the castle on water bus from Doorly Park in Sligo.

Hazelwood House
Located near Lough Gill , Hazelwood House is one of the largest Georgian Houses in the county.

 URBAN

Sligo
The second largest town in Connacht. Sligo is situated between Lough Gill and the sea, at the mouth of the Garravogue River, and encircled by hills and mountains. The hill of Knocknarea lies a couple of miles outside the town, and below it is the resort of Strandhill with long sandy beaches. Sligo Airport is located here. To the east of Sligo is Hazelwood Forest on the shores of the lake, and 10 miles north of the town are the BenBulben Mountains. Carrowmore, west of the town is a rich megalithic site with various tombs, dolmens, stone circles, passage graves etc. In the town the ruins of 13th century Sligo Abbey are an impressive sight.


Collooney
A medium-sized town, 7 miles south of Sligo town, Collooney is situated on the Owenmore River. The Teeling Monument, in memory of Bartholomew Teeling and the Battle of Carricknagat, is located here.


Enniscrone
A seaside resort situated on the shores of Killala Bay in West County Sligo. It has good golfing amenities. The beach contains some interesting Victorian bath-houses.


Dromore West
A small village picturesquely situated on the wooded banks of a river flowing down from the nearby Ox Mountains. The nearby Easky is a designated heritage town. It has two Martello towers and the 15th century Rosalee Castle.


Ballymote
7 miles south of Collooney, Ballymote is a thriving business town and site of the impressive ruins of Ballymote Castle and the Ballymote Franciscan Friary. The town is also a good centre for angling.


Strandhill
This is a popular seaside resort town 5 miles from Sligo town.


Tubbercurry
A small, market town at the foot of the Ox Mountains. Along with the nearby Gurteen, the area has a good tradition of Irish music.


Rosses Point
A seaside resort located 5 miles (km) north of Sligo town. Coney Island is a half mile offshore.
