River Shannon
The River Shannon is the longest river in Ireland and Great Britain. The Shannon Estuary is in county Limerick. With its three great lakes, inner lakes and tributaries, the Shannon offers over 270km of waterways. The river gathers speed on its course to the sea at Limerick. The mudflats at the Shannon estuary attract a variety of wildlife. The estuary is scattered with islands, the largest of which is Scattery Island. Most of the islands are used for grazing.

 URBAN

Limerick
Situated on the River Shannon, and only 15 miles from Shannon Airport, Limerick is a busy centre of trade. The architecture of Limerick is predominantly Georgian. In recent years new shopping malls and pedestrianised streets have been developed in the city centre. Some noteworthy sites include the mediaeval King John's Castle, the Custom House, Castle Lane with its authentic 18th / 19th century urban streetscape, and St. Mary's Cathedral. 15 miles south of Limerick City in Kilcornan, Pallaskenry, is a 600-acre plantation, Curraghchase Forest Park.

Adare
This small village is perhaps one of the prettiest in the country - with its 'old world' thatched cottages and mediaeval churches, it recalls a style of life which has almost vanished from modern Ireland. Situated in a woodland area near the River Maigue, the orange thatched cottages, beautiful old stone buildings and handsome old ruins line its broad main streets. Two beautiful old buildings in the village are Adare Manor - a Tudor-Gothic building from the mid 1800's, and the Franciscan Friary built on the riverbank. There are also ruins of a castle in the area.

Ballyhoura
The beautiful unspoilt countryside of Ballyhoura offers the ideal location. Nearby are the picturesque Ballyhoura and Galtee Mountains and the fertile plains of the Golden Vale.

Castleconnell
A picturesque village on the wooded banks of the River Shannon just 6 miles from Limerick City off the main Dublin Road. Nearby are the spectacular falls of Doonas. Georgian and neo-classical mansions can be seen beside the wooded river banks. The ruins of the de Burgo Castle can also be seen at the river crossing.

Kilmallock
This town houses the Norman remains of a tower castle, a tower gate, a medieval stone mansion and a Dominican friary.
