Launch of BBC Scotland and BBC Alba Investment may prove promising for Irish Language Content
2017-02-23 9:00:00 : Katie McNeice
The new channel is backed by just under €22.5M, with additional funding bringing the total support to over €35M. A further €1.5M is also pledged for BBC Alba, the Scottish Gaelic-Language channel.

Alan Esslemont, who has been the Director General of TG4 since October 2016, held the position of Head of Content for BBC Alba for over eight years. He also led the launch of the channel with Head of Service, Margaret Mary Murray.

Given the upturn in Irish language content in Ireland in recent years, with award-wining series such as ‘An Klondike’ and ‘Eipic’, the funding presents promising opportunities for this new content in our native language to travel internationally.

Wales was also promised an increase of just over €10M from the BBC last week, with further announcements concerning Northern Ireland expected in the coming weeks.

BBC Scotland will air each evening from 19:00 and is set to include a sixty-minute news slot running from 21:00.

Tony Hall, BBC Director General:
“[Scottish audiences] want us to better reflect their lives and better reflect modern Scotland. It is vital that we get this right. The best way of achieving that is a dedicated channel for Scotland. It’s a channel that will be bold, creative and ambitious, with a brand-new Scotland-edited international news program at its heart.”
