1963. Christy Brown is a guest at a fund-raising gala held in his honour. As he waits to be presented to the crowd, he talks to the nurse assigned to him. He offers her a copy of his biography which she begins to read as he waits. The film follows his biography. Born with cerebral palsy into an impoverished and large working class family in 1932, his parents are informed by the doctors that he will remain a vegetable for the rest of his life. This defines his father's relationship with him who treats him as a vegetable. His mother however, is unconvinced by the diagnosis. Christy is ten years old before he is able to communicate his fierce burning intelligence: picking up a piece of chalk with his left foot he writes the single word "M-O-T-H-E-R" on the ground.
Thereafter Christy begins to explore his artistic side: although almost his entire body is affected by the palsy (including his mouth which slurs his speech), he retains control over his left foot which he uses to paint with. At the age of 19 he enters a new clinic for cerebral palsy patients. There he meets Eileen, a specialist in treating palsy, who works with Christy to overcome his speech impediment.
