35th Galway Film Fleadh announce two more films
20 Jun 2023 : Luke Shanahan
With a week to go before the launch of the 35th edition of the Galway Film Fleadh, two more films are announced from the Music strand.

The Music on Film strand at the Galway Film Fleadh brings an array of pop icons and singer/songwriters from the local to the international, celebrating some of the biggest music stars in the world.

UK drama, Love Without Walls, winner of the Best UK Feature awards at both Manchester Film Festival and London Independent Film Festival, stars Niall McNamee and Shana Swash in a story about a couple who face the harsh realities of life on the streets after they fall behind on their rent. Despite their struggles, their shared love for music gives them the strength to carry on. Love Without Walls is produced by Karen Newman, best known for Just Charlie, winner of the Audience Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and is directed and written by Jane Gull, director of My Feral Heart. The film's original music is primarily written and performed by singer/songwriter and lead actor, Niall McNamee. The Irish premiere of Love Without Walls takes place on Wednesday 12th July at 7pm at the Town Hall Theatre. A post-show discussion with Niall McNamee, Jane Gull and Karen Newman will follow the screening.

Fans of Pavement will not want to miss the documentary, Louder Than You Think. Winner of the SXSW 2023 Audience Award for the 24 Beats Per Second screening section, this is a cinematic walkabout through the life of Gary Young, the original drummer of indie rock band Pavement. His on-stage antics and haphazard production methods (which helped launch the lo-fi aesthetic) were both a driving force of the band’s early rise and the cause of his eventual crash landing. Leaving a wake of joy and/or destruction at every turn, Gary teeters the thin line between self-expression and self-destruction. 30 years on with scoliosis, blood clots, and a shrivelled liver, Gary is still drumming with no regrets. The European premiere of Louder Than You Think will take place on July 12th, at 10pm at the Town Hall Theatre. A post-show discussion with producer Brian Thalken and cinematographer Dan O’Connell will follow the screening.

“We are immensely proud of our Music On Film strand which features some of the greatest musicians currently performing,” said Maeve McGrath, Director of Programming at the Galway Film Fleadh. “The documentary we announce today goes behind the scenes providing an up close and personal insight into the lives of musicians on the road while our music narrative drama is a love story that endures through the toughest of times”.

Full programme details will be announced on Tuesday June 27th with hundreds of events including screenings, Q+As and filmmaker interviews, panel discussions, and more.

Go to galwayfilmfleadh.com to book tickets for these films, or contact Town Hall Theatre box office on 091 569777.

The Galway Film Fleadh is supported by the Arts Council, Failte Ireland, Screen Ireland and Galway City Council.
