TG4 sign second Memorandum of Understanding with JTV, Jeonju Television
06 Dec 2019 : Nathan Griffin
TG4 sign Memorandum with Jeonju Television.
TG4 signed a memorandum of understanding with broadcasters from four different countries JTV (Jeonju Television), South Korea, MC ALBA which operates BBC ALBA, and Welsh production company, Cwmni Da.

The memorandum of understanding proposes to facilitate the exchange of best content and programmes; foster co-production of creative content; fund co-production projects.

Jeonju Television is a public service broadcaster which accesses funding from the Korean Communications Agency (KCA) for international co-production of this kind. The KCA is part of the South Korean Department of Science and Information Technology.

The initial 2019 partnership between TG4 and Jeonju Television resulted in two co-productions screened on TG4 in 2019,  An Balla, a 4 part series exploring the world’s most iconic walls and boarders;  and Taoide, a 3 part series charting the Science of our tides and how tidal communities tide on landscape and coastal communities.

Both series have won international awards, have sold worldwide by Sky Vision and attracted an average audience of 5 million per episode in South Korea.

The first project to go into production under this 2020 agreement is a three-part series entitled Rain Stories, which will be produced by Below the Radar Films for TG4. Cwmni Da, Wales, BBC Alba, and Northern Ireland Screen are also investing in a version in their respective languages.  The series will be distributed worldwide by Sky Vision.

Growing and internationalising the creative economy in Ireland is a key component of TG4’s 5-year strategy.  The collaboration with Jeonju Television builds on TG4’s strategy of fostering Irish production companies to develop and co-produce content with a view to international TV markets.
