Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has accumulated €8,854,036 at the Irish box office, surpassing Avatar, which has held this record since 2009.
Exactly one month and one day after its release in the Republic of Ireland, Barbie has surpassed both Titanic (€8,253,258) and Avatar (€8,702,770) to become the highest grossing film in Irish box office history.
The film has surpassed the previous record holder, James Cameron’s Avatar, by over €151k after a consecutive four weeks at the top of the Irish box office. Barbie’s success can be attributed in part to the Barbenheimer phenomenon, a double-bill conjured up by cinema fans online encouraging the public to attend both Barbie and Oppenheimer on their joint opening day, July 21st 2023.
Approximately 799,000 admissions were recorded in Irish cinemas in the two films' first week.
Oppenheimer has also seen great financial success at the Irish box office, holding strong in second place in the box office top ten week after week. The film has now accumulated €5.5m at the Irish box office.
Speaking on Barbie’s quick ascent to the top of the box office, Eoin Wrexon, CEO of Pearl and Dean Ireland had this to say: "To see Barbie on track to rank as one of the biggest films of all time at the Irish box office, [...] shows how cinema has returned stronger than ever.”
