COMPETITION: WIN A PAIR OF SEASON PASSES TO THE GALWAY FILM FLEADH
The 24th Galway film Fleadh will take place from Tuesday, 10th July to Sunday, 15th July, 2012. The six day 2012 international film event is unique amongst festivals as a welcoming environment to the casual cinema-goer as well as to the avid cinephiles and industry professionals. The Fleadh is famous for being a launching pad for Irish cinema but this year there is an unprecedented number of new Irish films, including 13 world premieres, seven European premieres and seven Irish premieres, and that’s before one gets to the shorts! IFTN has a pair of Season Passes to giveaway to the Galway Film Fleadh which entitles a lucky winner (and friend) acess to film screenings over the entire week* and a Fleadh bag of goodies! Highlights for this year’s festival include: The Good Man, starring Aidan Gillen; Jump, a dramatic and touching multi-strand narrative, set in Derry; Pilgrim Hill, the often-tragic story of the life of a bachelor farmer; King of the Travellers, a Hamlet-esque tragedy played out in the travelling community; Good Vibrations, which portrays a punk-era alternative Ulster; Silence a stunningly majestic film about a sound-recordist in solitude; and Citadel, an atmospheric urban horror story. On the documentary front the festival will screen Very Extremely Dangerous, Paul Duane’s tale of one of America’s last great outlaws; Lón sa Spéir the remarkable story behind one of the world’s most recognisable photos of the New York skyline; and The Gentleman Prizefighter’s biography of ‘gentleman’ Jim Corbett, one of the first true stars of the celebrity era. The festival will also have a strand dedicated to Danish film, which is one of the powerhouses of European cinema. The selection of new Danish films include Mads Matthiesen’s Teddy Bear, a heart-warming tale of a cripplingly shy Copenhagen body-builder’s quest for love and the Pusher trilogy from director Nicolas Refn (Drive). The subject of this year’s public interview (in association with IFTA and the French Embassy in Ireland) will be renowned French actress, Isabelle Huppert. Celebrated for her versatility and fearless approach to acting, Huppert has portrayed some of world cinema’s most provocative female characters. Isabelle has had the most films in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival and is one of only four actresses who have won the Best Actress Award twice.
