Tom Vaughan Lawlor as Hugh Lane in 'Citizen Lane'
20 Apr 2018 :
Tom Vaughan Lawlor as Hug Lane in 'Citizen Lane'
Directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan, written by Mark O'Halloran, and produced by Jane Doolan, the film is a portrait of Hugh Lane: aesthete, collector, dealer, philanthropist.

The film star Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Michael Gambon, Marty Rae, Derbhle Crotty, Bosco Hogan, Lesley Conroy, Gemma Leah Deveraux

'Citizen Lane' is an innovative mix of documentary and drama that delivers a vivid and compelling portrait of Hugh Lane, one of the most fascinating and yet enigmatic figures in modern Irish history.  A man of multiple contradictions, by turns infuriatingly parsimonious or extraordinarily generous, a professed nationalist and a knight of the realm; a monumental snob and a fearless campaigner for access to the arts.  The film is directed by Thaddeus O Sullivan, with the drama written by Mark O’Halloran and starring Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Hugh Lane. The drama is intercut with interviews from contemporary documentary contributors such as historian Professors Roy Foster and Paul Rouse and Art Historian Morna O’Neill who offer a narrative richly illustrated by the paintings of his collection with a twist in its tail in the long-running campaign to recover for Ireland Lane’s Bequest of 39 great impressionist paintings, amongst them Monet, Renoir and Manet.

Hugh Lane’s story is an Irish odyssey set amid the cultural and political ferment of artistic and cultural experience in the early 20th century and follows Lane’s hard fought project to establish the world’s first public modern art gallery, his untimely death on the Lusitania, and his contested will. That story continues to the present day in the long-running campaign to recover for Ireland Lane’s bequest of 39 paintings, including works by Monet, Renoir and Manet.

For many Irish people, particularly Dubliners, Hugh Lane is a well-known name - but relatively few know the story behind the man, a citizen who was arguably Ireland’s greatest ever benefactor of the arts.

'Citizen Lane' is produced by James Mitchell, Jane Doolan and Sheila Ahern. It is funded by RTÉ and The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland with the participation of Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, where most of the filming took place .

It was shot last autumn in Dublin; Eclipse is the Irish distributor and it opens at Irish cinemas 18 May 2018.
