Barry Keoghan to play opposite Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel
16 Mar 2023 : Luke Shanahan
Mescal and Keoghan to co-star in Gladiator.
Barry Keoghan is reported to be playing Emperor Geta in Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated Gladiator Sequel. Paul Mescal’s casting as the film’s protagonist Lucius was confirmed last year.

In January of this year, it was announced that Oscar-nominated Paul Mescal (Aftersun, God’s Creatures) had been cast as Lucius in the upcoming Gladiator Sequel helmed by director Ridley Scott (The Last Duel, Alien, Blade Runner). Lucius, the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus in the original 2000 film, was first performed by Spencer Treat Clark (Mystic River). Mescal will be playing an adult version of the character twenty years later.

Today, the second piece of casting news in relation to the sequel was announced, with Oscar-nominated Barry Keoghan (Banshees of Inisherin, Calm with Horses) set to play Emperor Geta, also known as Publius Septimius Geta, opposite fellow IFTA-nominee Mescal.

Plot details are currently under wraps, and it has not been confirmed whether any cast members from the original film will be returning. The sequel was officially greenlit by Paramount Pictures in 2018, with a screenplay by Peter Craig (The Town, The Batman). Scott is set to begin production on the film once he has wrapped filming his upcoming biopic Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular French political leader.

Speaking to Deadline, director Ridley Scott said of the sequel’s screenplay: “We have a good footprint, a good, logical place to go. You can't just do another Gladiator type movie. There’s enough components from the first one to pick up the ball and continue it."

Development on a Gladiator sequel began in June 2001, and has been intermittent ever since. In 2006, there were reports of a draft in which Russell Crowe’s Maximus was to be resurrected, and return to Earth to halt the development of Christianity. The creative direction of the sequel has diverged from this draft since then, choosing to follow Lucius instead of Maximus.

Gladiator 2 is currently set to arrive in cinemas on Friday, November 22nd, 2024.
