Long-time collaborators Cillian Murphy and Alan Moloney will launch their new production company Big Things Films with Steve, a Netflix adaptation of Max Porter’s novel Shy.
The upcoming Small Things Like These, set to open the Berlin International Film Festival, will mark the fifth collaboration between actor/producer Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and producer Alan Moloney (Brooklyn). Following this, they are launching their new production company Big Things Films with Steve, an adaptation of Max Porter’s novel Shy, which Netflix has recently greenlit and will distribute globally.
Steve is described as a reimagining of Porter’s Shy that traces a pivotal 24 hours in the life of its titular character, a headteacher (Murphy) of a reform school who struggles to keep his students in line, while also grappling with his spiraling mental health.
Tim Mielants (Small Things Like These) will direct Steve, with Murphy and Moloney producing. Porter has adapted the screenplay. Murphy has previously starred in the stage adaptation of Porter's Grief is the Thing with Feathers. Murphy and Moloney have previously collaborated on IFTA Best Picture winner Intermission, Neil Jordan’s Breakfast on Pluto, Perrier’s Bounty, and The Delinquent Season.
Murphy and Moloney’s upcoming collaboration Small Things Like These will open the Berlin International Film Festival on February 15th, 2024.
