Three finalists were chosen from a selection of 15 films screening in the First Appearance strand of the festival, which runs in the Dutch city until the 29 November. Other projects shortlisted for the First Appearance award, which carries a cash prize of €5000, are ‘Garbo: The Spy’ (Spain) by Edmon Roch and ‘Talhotblond’ (US) by Barbara Schroeder. The winners will be announced during the festival’s closing ceremony.
Currently, beekeepers are facing an extremely worrying problem known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD); colonies of bees swarm out of their hives but then fail to return. This jeopardizes not only the beekeepers' livelihoods, but also food production in general. In ‘Colony’, Carter Gunn and Ross McDonnell examine this problem from a number of perspectives. The film is produced by Fastnet Films’ Morgan Bushe and Macdara Kelleher.
'Colony' will now compete against the two other finalists - Carter Gunn's project 'Garbo: The Spy' which is representing Spain and U.S. film 'Talhotblond' from Edmond Roch. The prize in the Best First Appearance amounts to €5,000.
'Colony' producer Morgan Bushe is delighted with the news; "We found out the news late last night" he tells IFTN "The IDFA are now flying Ross McDonnell back to Amsterdam for the award ceremony on Friday so we'll see what happens. It's great for the film to have reached the final shortlist of three and whatever happens from here on in is a bonus".
