Ireland's Brightest Creative Minds in Tech, Art & Design on Show at the IADT Grad Show 2018
25 May 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Almost 300 of Ireland’s most pioneering students in Film + Media, Design + Visual Arts & Creative Technologies will present their final year works at this year’s Graduate Show, in the Institute of Art, Design & Technology (IADT), Dun Laoghaire from 1st -6th June 2018.

The IADT Grad Show is the biggest in the country and features projects across all industries and life experiences including sports, Virtual Reality, plants, recipes, prop making, love and attraction, consent, medical treatments and issues of homelessness and mental health. The work is the manifestation of four years study and ultimately the vision of Ireland’s future creative leaders; filmmakers, designers, developers, animators and artists. Previous graduates include visual artists Vera Klute and Maser, academy award nominated Kirsten Sheridan and the Queen of Ireland Panti Bliss!

IADT is Ireland’s only institute of art, design and technology to focus specifically on the creative, cultural and technological industries. Working closely with industry its interdisciplinary environment creates innovative graduates with an entrepreneurial spirit. The standard of their work is such that many of the 2018 class have already secured employment pre-graduation; companies include Workday, Opennet, Aladdin Education Software and software innovators, Sonalake. The college’s entrepreneurial ethos has resulted in several students starting their own productions companies.

The IADT Graduate Show 2018 exhibition is open to the public from 1st- 6th June 2018. The projects are as diverse as the creative mind allows and highlights include:

  • Interaction by Michael Culligan is an app that allows young adults with mild autism, such as Asperger's, to build their social interaction skills.
  • In response to the hospital overcrowding issue, Amanda Burns uses IoT to monitor people with ongoing medical conditions at home, so that they do not have to visit hospitals so frequently.
  • Luke Maguire’s projection mapping projects highlights the issue of Homeless in Ireland.
  • PlantPal by Gareth Williams is an Android phone application which can identify different plant species using machine learning.
  • ReciPy by Sylwia Calka is like Netflix but for recipes; a web application that recommends recipes based on user preferences and historical data that decreases the time spent on finding recipes and increasing the time left for cooking.
  • “Relax, love.” by Audrey Hendry is a conceptual photography project based around self-image and the issue of consent; we perceive ourselves differently than others perceive us, we share photographs of ourselves on social media daily but rarely thought is given to the audience of these images.
  • Susan O’Donovan looked at whether VR and meditation could provide safe treatment methods for chronic pain while avoiding the negative effects of drug therapies.
  • John Kenny developed an app that allows users to point an iPhone/iPad at a football crest which the app will recognise as a team and present information about the team in augmented reality. It includes features such as predicting results of upcoming matches and a 'find Pogba' augmented reality game.

At any given time there are approx 2,500 students on campus in IADT across the different departments of Technology + Psychology, Design + Visual Arts and Film + Media and working in the Media Cube which offers start-up digital ventures facilities and a vibrant environment designed to help businesses grow.
