Making the Cut

Pulse College talks Training, Animation & Partnership with Griffith College
17 Feb 2017 : Katie McNeice
We catch up with Marketing Manager Ray Lonergan and Head of Animation David Williams on the latest animation news from the leading Dublin college.

We outline the current courses offered by Pulse below, in addition to our conversation with their team on what makes them unique, their relationship with fellow educators Griffith College and future opportunities for students.

  • BA (Hons) Degree in Animation
  • Full Time Diploma in Animation
  • Part Time Diploma in Animation
  • Intro to Animation – Short Course
  • Traditional Clay Sculpting Techniques – Short Course
  • Sequential Art and Design  - Short Course

IFTN: What are the unique aspects of the Animation Courses at Pulse College?
“At Pulse College we are really focused on encouraging the students individual own art style whilst providing the essential knowledge and tools to be industry ready. The fact that each of our course lecturers are currently highly involved in the industry means that we are keeping things fresh and up to date, whilst giving a range of industry based practical samples. This also means that each student will not just have their own growing art style but the knowledge on how to collaborate with others, which is essential for developing as a visual artist.”

IFTN: Is your collaboration with Griffith College on the animation course a new venture?
“This collaboration is part of an ongoing partnership, which has seen us work together on a number of Degree and Certificate courses in the areas of Music Production, Music Technology, and Film & TV Production.”

IFTN: What was your reasoning for joining forces with Griffith College on the new Animation Course?
“Griffith College have a wealth of knowledge in key business skill and visual culture. The collaboration seemed like a natural fit as the combination allows not just for the development of art skills, but also the practical business skills, needed to succeed.”

IFTN: What kind of future opportunities do you see for people who get into animation?
“The opportunities are vast especially as animation in Ireland is recognised as a world class leader. The Irish animation industry is continually growing and has emerged as a central component of Ireland’s digital and creative economy. With multiple award winning Irish studios employing thousands of full time staff, the industry is full with creative roles from story-boarding artists to 3D modellers, character riggers, texture artists, environmental design, VFX. The skills are also industry transferable, with roles in film, TV, game development and advertising offering opportunities to those with a strong animation background.”
