2017-02-14 9:30:00 : Katie McNeice
The one-day event on Wednesday March 8th will include a screening of Darren Thornton’s debut feature, an interview event and lunch at the G Hotel. It is hosted by the Galway Film Centre in association with the BAI.

At a high level, the talk will address the writing and development process behind the award-winning Irish film for writers, producers and directors, with Writer Colin Thornton and Writer/Director Darren Thornton interviewed by Christian O’Reilly (Sanctuary).

‘A Date for Mad Mary’ began as a one-woman stage show written and performed by Yasmine Akram and directed by Darren Thornton of Calipo Theatre Company.

As a film adaptation it shared the Best Irish Film Award at the Galway Film Fleadh 2016 with ‘The Young Offenders’. Lead actress Seána Kerslake also picked up the Ray Bingham New Talent Award at the leading festival.

Topics

  • The adaptation from play to screenplay
  • The co-writing process
  • The development process
  • An analysis of the screenplay and use of story tools

Participants will also be emailed a copy of the script in advance of the training day. Although the film will be screened on the day, it is also available to watch on Volta.

The film was an Element Pictures production, in association with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/The Irish Film Board and TV3 with the support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union.
